understanding Israel history will help us properly understand the Bible
The account of the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob alone takes up Gen. 12-50 and evidently is important to God especially, when taking into consideration that the whole creative narrative took only two chapters (Gen. 1-2), and the whole story of the fall into sin took only one chapter Gen 3. From divine standpoint, the history of Israelis the key to history as a whole.
The history of Israel begins in Gen 12
Israel is involved in all dispensations beginning with the dispensation of promise.
In the dispensation of promise, the covenant with Abraham lays the broad basis for all God’s dealings with Israel in subsequent generations.
The dispensation of promise is the basis under which God establishes Israel.
The dispensation of the law in Ex.19 conditions Israel’s life until it is fulfilled on the cross.
The conditions of life and the laws of life. How must one govern there life and lead there life.
Most of Israel record history relates to the dispensation of the law.
In the dispensation of grace Israel shares with the gentiles the privilege of grace. Both in salvation and as the rule of life.
In the future dispensation of the Kingdom, Israel again takes a prominent role in possessing her promised land and being subject to Jesus Christ as her King.
The five covenants are major factors in Israels history and prophecy.
Study chapter 21
- Abrahamic covenant is the basis for Israels program. Essentially what Israel was called to do and be. Gen. 12:1-4
Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
There are three profound promises that are given in the Abrahamic conavant
- First promise is that he would have a numerous amount of descendants .
And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”
This is Gods promise and we see that it became a reality.
Also, he would have much personal blessing.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.
Abraham allowed his nephew Lot to pick a land to dwell first.
Then he chose.
But Abraham had so much confidence in Gods promise he didn’t matter what Lot picked.
A person who has the promise of God’s provision does not have to cling to things.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”
And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
Genesis 15:18 (NKJV)
On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—
This was God discussing the geographical boundaries of Israel.
Israel has never possessed this land in its entirety, but she will when Christ returns to reign as Messiah.
That his name would be great.
Gen 12:12
Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.
That he would personally be a blessing.
Genesis 12:2 (NKJV)
I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
That the blessing of a great nation would emerge
Also that all the earth would be blessed through Abraham.
I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Which Christ is a descendant of Abraham. And the blessing of the nations would be through Jesus Christ.
- The mosaic covenant conditions the life of Israel Ex. 19.
God gave Moses the law which was to govern the relation with the people of Israel and God.
Moses was given appoxitemently 600 commands and they are classified in three major divisions.
the commands contain the express will of God. Ex. 20:1-26. referring to the 10 commandments.
the judgements, relating to civil and social life of Israel. Ex. 21:1-24:11. Like the law concerning servants etc. etc.
- The ordinances of God Ex. 24:12-31:18. This refers to things about the tabernacle and sacrifices, and offering etc. etc.
The Mosic was a conditional covenant and embodied the principle that if Israel is obedient , God will bless them, but if Israel is disobedient God will discipline them.
Although the law had gracious elements but it was ultimately a covenant of works.
- The Palestinian covenant relates particularly to Israel’s possession and disposition of the land, anticipating , however the ultimate permanent possession in the millennial kingdom.
Deut. 30:1-10.
I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,” Says the Lord your God.
This is actually a unconditional covenant speaking of Israels final possession of the land.
- The Davidic covenant conditions Israels relationship to kingdom of David and anticipates prophetically the future kingdom where Christ will reign on earth in the Millennium , with David resurrected and acting as His royal prince.
The Davidic covenant is an unconditional covenant that God gave David. 2 Sam. 7:12-16
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
An everlasting throne.
His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me;
And a everlasting king.
then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers.
And a everlasting kingdom
Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.
This kingdom isn’t as Christ reigning in heaven because David never reigned in heaven but it is a earthly throne.
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
