Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
I want to major on what the Bible majors on and minor on what the Bible minors on and be silent where the Bible is silent.
the Bible majors on grace which is mentioned 163 times in the new testament.
the Bible majors on loving God and loving one another. The greek words agape and agapo translated the God kind of love is mentioned 250 times. which is a covenantual kind of love.
Faith is mention 243 times in the new testament
The great commission. Not the great suggestion
It’s not a mission of the church it is thee mission of the church.
When we started Acts 2 Community Church in Saginaw 4 years ago I didn’t have to come up with a mission for the church.
I didn’t have to come up with something fancy.
I didn’t have to pray for hours or years trying to figure it out.
It was spelled out clearly in the Bible. Go make Disciples.
The vehicle or package we use and each church culture is a bit different from the church down the road but the mission is the same.
We are a saved people and a sent people. Sent to disciple
1) Disciple means The Greek word mathētēs (“disciple”) is from the verb manthanō (“to learn”). Thus, a disciple is a pupil or learner.
Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible Disciple
Disciple. Someone who follows another person or another way of life and who submits himself to the discipline (teaching) of that leader or way.
Disciple is one who learns, one who applies, and one who teaches.
A disciple is someone who looks like Jesus, acts, talks, walks, prays, loves, and die like Jesus.
That’s what we are predestined to be and do.
Romans 8:29 ESV
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
The process of discipleship is God is chiseling away those areas in our life that do not look like Him.
Michelangelo said “ Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
Another words help bring them into a covenant relationship with God.
We have all been given this ministry of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18 ESV
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
We are all ministers and missionaries.
God has created us for ministry.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Some People don’t want to be discipled:
They don’t want to be corrected.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Its going to cost:
Matthew 16:24 AMP
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to be My disciple, let him deny himself [disregard, lose sight of, and forget himself and his own interests] and take up his cross and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying, also].
Jesus purchased us and paid the price on the cross for you and me. Now we have to pay the price of walking out our Christianity. This is called discipleship.
My wife saved money and bought me my dream guitar called a Martin HD28 and was given to me as a gift. However I have to pay the price of practicing and getting good at my guitar.
I believe its a individual effort as well as a corporate effort.
God expects us to use the Gifts that He has given us for ministry.
1 Peter 4:10 ESV
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
We need to find our place in the Body and get plugged in.
Find your passion - what thrills you
Find what breaks your heart or what kills you
Find what what fills you up as you do it
Ask yourself
What did God save you from?
What do you think God saved you for?
There was a story about a man with his new bride who was traveling fast down a dark road and took a turn to fast and the car rolled over a few times.
His wife was badly injured and saw if she didn’t get immediate help she would end up dying.
So he started looking all over the neighborhood and came across a sign that said the office of Dr. Bill Jones.
So he ran back to the car and grabed his wife and started making his way to the office of Dr Bill Jones. He knocks on the door while holding his wife and the Dr opens the door.
The husband says sir please take care my wife she’s dying. The old man says son I’m retired. I don’t do this anymore. The said sir take care of my wife. He said I told you I’m retired.
Sir you only have two choices. Either take care of my wife or take down your sign. You can’t have them both.
We are either the church of Jesus Christ that makes disciples or a religious or social club. But we can’t have the sign and not make disciples.
You can’t have them both. If your not making disciples then take down your sign.
