These passages are a perfect case study of temptation, for sin cannot be blamed on environment or heredity.
Genesis 3:6 (NKJV)
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
They ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil at the same time.
Just thought that was interesting imagery them snacking on the fruit at the same time. Like they are at Starbucks eating a pastry.
Maybe they are looking into each others eyes just eating this fruit. Naked eating fruit this is the life.
Their nakedness represented the fact that they were oblivious to evil. But the serpent was more crafty than all. Satan would use his craftiness to take advantage of their integrity.
But maybe in there minds they where thinking this could be a new start! A new life something that is totally great and exciting.
Genesis 3:7 NKJV
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
This story of Adam and Eve has faced allot of scrutiny from skeptics and atheist because seemingly its ridiculous, but its a very profound
Because these verses capsulize all of human history.
When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit there eyes became open. But open to what? There nakedness.
There eyes weren’t open to a universe of possibilities. there eyes weren’t open to the complexities of Gods infinite wisdom. there eyes weren’t open to seeing life from another dimension or anything like that.
But there eyes where open to there nakedness.
What a cheap trade off. I go from having access to an infinite all loving God. The most beautiful garden man could ever to look upon. Abundant prosperity!
And now I’m only aware of my nakedness I am aware of my shame.
Sins proper fruit is shame
They exchanged there innocence, for the embarrassing knowledge that they are naked.
Nakedness which should be pleasing to the eye causes great displeasure.
Genesis 2:25 NKJV
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
to be ashamed means to have a painful feeling and emotional distress (sometimes to the point of despair (hopelessness)), by having done something wrong, with an associative meaning of having the disapproval of those around them.
Bakers Encyclopedia defines Shame. as “an unpleasant emotional reaction by an individual to an actual or presumed negative judgment of himself by others resulting in self-depreciation.
When I’m shameful I don’t know my value and who I am. We realize that ones value cannot be depreciated in Christ.
Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
When it speaks about He despised the shame meaning He went against the shame.
He didn’t allow the shame of the cross. His public nakedness to bring Him shame.
He didn’t allow public humiliation to bring Him shame.
We share the shame with Christ.
Hebrews 13:13 So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore. 14 For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
Also Adam thought he would receive some profound wisdom. Like he would have the wisdom of God. That he would completely know the secret's of the universe and how God made the earth to be. Nope.
The wisdom that they thought they would’ve gained, was only used to sew fig leaves. to make loin coverings.
And Adam probably didn’t sew his own fig leaves Eve probably did it lol haha.
Our whole life we use the wisdom we gained from the fall to make our own fig leaves. Essentially to hid our own nakedness. Hid our own shame.
The nakedness wasn’t a problem but the distorted awareness of that nakedness is the problem.
His new consciousness of good and evil was both like and unlike the divine knowledge (3:22), differing from it and from innocence as a sick man’s aching awareness of his body differs both from the insight of the physician and the unconcern of the man in health.
Because in….
Genesis 2:25 NKJV
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Adam and Eve where naked the whole time but yet they weren’t ashamed.
The nakedness wasn’t shameful it was the awareness of my nakedness which became shameful.
Their efforts to hide their shame are as puny as their efforts to hide from God since their man-made coverings are ineffective.
In verse 21- God made durable garments from animal skins for their needed apparel.
Genesis 3:8 NKJV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
In the cool of the day means it was evening.
Genesis 3:9 NKJV
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
The fact that God was walking in the garden searching for Adam reveals of the intimacy Adam had with God. There was enjoyment and fellowship with God.
God is walking but hes not walking with someone but hes walking by himself. And Adam and Eve are hiding.
Adam should’ve been walking with God but he was hiding from God.
Enoch walked with God, and Noah and Abraham.
God reaching out to Adam this was God way of showing that He cared.
This was a act of Gods mercy He’s calling out to Adam.
The issue isn’t Gods discipline, that reveals that He loves us. Hebrews 12:6. Proverbs 3:12.
The issue would’ve been if God never showed up. and was indifferent . Or a giving over
Eventually we will be back in Eden, but not clothed with figs but clothed in glory.
2 Corinthians 5:4 NKJV
For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
St Augustine “If … it be asked what death God threatened man with …, whether … bodily or spiritual or that second death, we answer: It was all.”
