John 3:22-36

Were told that jesus and his disciples are

Baptising in the judean counterside- if you remember from John 1 talking about the role of john the baptist, the forerunner of christ, the one one who would go befor christ and announce the message of repentance and prepare the people for the coming messiah - , this was the general location where john the baptist was baptising. Were told in Mark 1:5-10 that all “whole judean counterside was coming out to John, confessign their sin and being baptised in the Jordan river

So we have Jesus and his disciples —----- and john and his disciples

Jesus and his disciples are baptising on the judean countryside

And john is baptising at Aenon near Salim- this location is unknown but its imporatt becucase were told the water is plentiful there.

Its important for us to understand that Jonh and Jesus were a real thread to the Jewish establishment, many, many people were coming to John and Jesus for repentance and baptism

Unlike christian baptism this was baptism for the purpose of purification

Where christian baptism is what follows salvation, full body submersion is symbolic of new birth, new life, the body being dead to self, new life in the father, son and holy spirit. Romans 6:4-7 (NASB

Jewish baptist ( mikvah) is for the purpose of cleansing ones body from impurties. Not a bath, but a purifying oneself before God.

Johns location was essential to full body submersion for purification

If you remember from chapter 1,

John was a the one who would bear witness about the light( jesus) that would take away the sin from the world.

John was simply a teacher

Had large crowds following him, had disciples

Jesus and John move into the judean countryside

, water was plentiful,

important because of baptism

Not christian baptist

After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized— 24 for John had not yet been thrown into prison

Were told that Jesus and John along with their disciples came into the land of judea to baptist because the land was abundant with water.

The significance of water was probably for whole body baptist

Unlike christian baptistm-

This was baptism of purification

What do we know about John the baptist

Interesting man

His clothing camels hair, diet locaut and will honey

We are told in malachi that John would be chosen by God to be the forerunner for the messiah, Johns mission would be to prepare the way for Jesus

He would do this be proclaiming the news of repentance and baptism

Why john?

Jesus himself said that “those born of womens no one was greater than john,
