title-- problems at the table

Imagine sitting at a table with your closest people
Q. Who do you have there?
mom
dad
friends
cousins
You are probably going to have a great time with eachother
but what I want you to know is
that each person at that table ,, including you
has issues with sin....
im not talking just the outward expression of doing bad things
im talking about the human nature of the flesh
that is condesending, prideful, and quick to judge.
We all struggle with sin
and many times our behaviors are sinful and we dont even realize it.
When you snicker and make fun of somebody in your classroom
you may not think anything of it
but you are sinning against God in making fun of somebody that is made in his image...
when you fantasize about how you will get somebody back
or you plot in your head something mean against someone else you sin against God.
When you try to act cool and beter than everyone else you sin against God..
now let me tell you, we all do this at different times
because we live in the sinfulness of our flesh…
I just want you to be aware of it so you can go to God for forgivness..
In the spirit we know we ought to be loving, kind, generous, all together good.
but we have the flesh with its emotions and temptations to act like.....
dummies.. is that a good word?
Today we will learn about some problems at the dinner table.
we will learn how Jesus still loves his disciples, even when they act foolishly.
and it needs to remind us that our God died for us
even when we act like..... am I allowed to call us dummies.
we all act like this sometimes
but Gods forgivness is greater than our failures....
lets open in luke 22 ---verse 21(dont read yet)
now we just learned about the last supper.
and communion.
Jesus is eating the passover feast
and he institutes the new covenant
new agreement between man and God— that includes the final atonment for sin by the death of Jesus for the sins of all who would recieve Him by faith.
in fulfillment of the law, no longer need animal sacrafices or to observe many of the old testemant ceremonial laws and dietary restrictions..
He has ushered in the new covenant through the sacrament of communion
and now things start to go a little of the rails.
We are going to see 4 types of sinners at the table
read verse 21-23
the first sin we see is that of betrayal.
apostate— one who turns away from the faith.
After they share in communion
Jesus points out that one of the disciples at the table is a traitor.
that turned for the worst pretty quick.
it started to stir up concern amongst the 12..
read 24-29
The next sin we see at the table is pride
How many of you can relate to wanting to be the greatest?
not in the good way of wanting to excel at work or school..
this is more related to wanting to be the better than everybody else
and getting your value by how good you are percieved by others
Here Jesus teaches the disciples about leadership
If you want to be great in Gods kingdom
you need to

Become one who serves

I like this analogy
you are doing a team race
Who is the better leader?
the one who crosses the finish line first
or the one who is able to finish first but finishes last
Why would he finish last,
because he knows the team is only as good as the weakest player.
instead of showing everyone how good You are by coming in first
you are willing to be in the back to encourage the teamates to the finish..
The best and greatest leaders are the ones who take the lower position
you dont need the glory.
because it doesnt belong to you....it belongs to God.
Jesus makes the referance of pagan nations that have evil kings
who have pompus titles and Rule with heavy hands
Instead He establishes Himself as a king who serves
Mark 10:45 NKJV
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Is this how you are.
If you want to be great in the kingdom of God
you need to learn how to serve others and take the low position.
It is not important to be popular and liked by everyone.
It is not important to be the coolest and the big shot.
It is important to be humbled and as phillipians 2:3 says
Philippians 2:3 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
moving on in verse
31-34
the next sin we see at the table is
peter is going to deny Jesus
Peter is going to fail
and so are we at times in our life
this is where we need to be reminded

Jesus is praying for you

Jesus has said that satan has asked to totally attack peter
similarly in the way of job.
satan wanted to sift peter like wheat
explain threshing floor
satan wanted to get the wheat and destroy it
but Jesus prayed for peter that his faith would not fail.
When you face trials
Jesus will do the same for you
Christ intercedes for peter
this means that he prayed for him
now do you know that Jesus still prays for you.
Hebrews 7:25 NKJV
Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Jesus is still active on your behalf in heaven in this way..
When life starts getting hard
we are told to pray
but even more you need to know that you have Jesus praying for you.
this is why you can be secure in your salvation.
in arrogance Peter proclaimed I am strong and nothing will happen to me
yet Jesus professes you will have a moment of wavering in your faith..
you may waiver in faith at some point in your life, but trust that
in the same way Jesus was praying for peters faith
he will be fighting for you too.
read 35-38
At the end of the dialouge
Jesus points to a messianic prophescy in Isaiah 53:12 . this prophecy was written by Isaiah about the messiah who was promised to save Israel.
Isaiah 53:12 NKJV
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
This is the main point of these last verses
I am going to die for your sin
(((explain gospel in Isaiah 53 )))numbered with transgressors- took on sin crucufied next to murderer and thief
furthermore your ministry is going to take a terrible turn
so get prepared
we might say an equivelent is
the world is getting messed up
you should go buy a gun....
and some of you would have the same reaction as the disciples
Instead of heading the implications of His death on the cross
you would be like
Lord j and j gun shop has pistols on sale this week
or Jesus should I get a scope with it…
this is what the disciples do here
and I imagine that in the same type of irritation
I have when my son wont listen
Jesus says ENOUGH
Im done… your not getting it
this brings us to our last point

God has done it all

When we look at this passage
Jesus institutes the lords supper
the bread and the wine
His body and blood
to remember his work on the cross
then we see how foolish and sinful His disciples act
it is a reminder that we are far from perfect.
you will fail, and struggle, and find your self in a place
where you think to yourself
how could God love and save me....
and when that happens, remind yourself of this passage
Christ has been numbered with the sinners and took on the sins of the world.
He didnt do this for deserving people
He did it for boneheads who strruggle with pride and jealousy and anger...
he paid for those sins at the cross
He has done it all
so that when you recognize your
shortcomings
you can boldly say My God has done it all
he has purchased my salvation
He has forgiven my sin
and when you see that kind of love to us who still struggle with sin
we can boldly say
Christ has saved me
I am forgiven
I am a child of God.
Lets pray....
