Hear Now the Word of the Lord

OLD Testament Reading Isaiah 29:1-24

Ah, Ariel, Ariel,

the city where David encamped!

Add year to year;

let the feasts run their round.

2 Yet I will distress Ariel,

and there shall be moaning and lamentation,

and she shall be to me like an Ariel.

3 And I will encamp against you all around,

and will besiege you with towers

and I will raise siegeworks against you.

4 And you will be brought low; from the earth you shall speak,

and from the dust your speech will be bowed down;

your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost,

and from the dust your speech shall whisper.

5 But the multitude of your foreign foes shall be like small dust,

and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff.

And in an instant, suddenly,

6 you will be visited by the Lord of hosts

with thunder and with earthquake and great noise,

with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.

7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,

all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her,

shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.

8 As when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating,

and awakes with his hunger not satisfied,

or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking,

and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched,

so shall the multitude of all the nations be

that fight against Mount Zion.

9 Astonish yourselves and be astonished;

blind yourselves and be blind!

Be drunk, but not with wine;

stagger, but not with strong drink!

10 For the Lord has poured out upon you

a spirit of deep sleep,

and has closed your eyes (the prophets),

and covered your heads (the seers).

11 And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”

12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

13 And the Lord said:

“Because this people draw near with their mouth

and honor me with their lips,

while their hearts are far from me,

and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,

14 therefore, behold, I will again

do wonderful things with this people,

with wonder upon wonder;

and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,

and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

15 Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel,

whose deeds are in the dark,

and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”

16 You turn things upside down!

Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,

that the thing made should say of its maker,

“He did not make me”;

or the thing formed say of him who formed it,

“He has no understanding”?

17 Is it not yet a very little while

until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,

and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?

18 In that day the deaf shall hear

the words of a book,

and out of their gloom and darkness

the eyes of the blind shall see.

19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,

and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

20 For the ruthless shall come to nothing

and the scoffer cease,

and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,

21 who by a word make a man out to be an offender,

and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate,

and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.

22 Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:

“Jacob shall no more be ashamed,

no more shall his face grow pale.

23 For when he sees his children,

the work of my hands, in his midst,

they will sanctify my name;

they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob

and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.

24 And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding,

and those who murmur will accept instruction.”

May God add his blessing to this reading of his Word
New Testament Reading Acts 13:13-52

Hear Now the Very Word Of God

Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem,

14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.”

16 So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said:

“Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.

17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.

18 And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.

19 And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance.

20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’

23 Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.

24 Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.

27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.

28 And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

29 And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

30 But God raised him from the dead,

31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.

32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,

33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

“ ‘You are my Son,

today I have begotten you.’

34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“ ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’

35 Therefore he says also in another psalm,

“ ‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’

36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,

37 but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.

38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

39 and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers,

be astounded and perish;

for I am doing a work in your days,

a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ”

42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.

43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.

45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.

46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

“ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles,

that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.

50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

The Grass withers the Flower Fades but the Word of Our God shall stand forever

HP - Acts 13 13-52 Proclaiming the Gospel Historically and Biblically

Vs 13-15 Proclaim the Gospel where people are reading the Bible.

When proclaiming the Word of God the book of Acts is very instructive to both
Preachers of the Word of God.
And to hearers of the Word of God.
God does not leave us wondering what a sermon should look like.
or what content would drive people to Christ who are his elect
And what content would drive out those that are Satans seed
Those that are condemned by the the Word of God AND who will never except it.
And Acts 13 verses 13-52 does just that.
For those of you that like to take notes or like outlines
my first point begins in Verses 13-15
Where Paul

Vs 13-15 Proclaims the Gospel where people are reading the Bible.

Well there is a concept.
If people are willing to listen to the Word of God read.
Then they would be willing to hear it expounded.
And this is why Paul goes to the synagogue.
It was the practice of the Jews to read the Word of God from the Law and the Prophets as Verse 15 states.
It was the Sabbath of the Jews so they were ready to Hear God speak by reading His Word.
And so children if you ever want to hear God speak to you.
Read the Word of God.
If you ever want to know what God thinks about money
What you should look for in a spouse
Read the Word of God.
God has an opinion on everything that pertains to life and godliness.
But the Central message of the Bible God declares this throughout the entire Bible
His main message
His Homiletical Point
Is God’s Glory and Man’s Salvation
And men and women can only find this Salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.
And this is who Paul is about to declare to the Jewish people this Sabbath morning at the synagogue in our text.
And the Leaders at the synagogues must of known Paul.
Paul described himself in Philippians 3:5
Philippians 3:5 He was “circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;”
in Philippians verses 6-7 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
So Paul was in the Good old boys club if there was one among the leadership in the synagogues.
Of course this will end when He points to the Messiah as Christ Jesus.
And that is Just what he is about to do
And he is Going to do it in a way that would relate with the Jews.
He is going to go through their History
And his history
And he starts in the land of Egpyt and the peoples stay there
The Jewish leaders ask Paul to give a word of encouragement to the people in verse 15
For those keeping an outline are next point in

Vs. 16-25 Proclaiming the Gospel using the people of God’s History.

Paul Starts by saying Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.
Pauls audience is not just Israel it is all those who have a knowledge of God.
A fear of God.
They have heard the Law and the prophets read
And they are undone
They realize that God is God
And we are sinful man
And when it comes to the law of God
It strips us of our self righteousness
Because all men and all women sin in thought and Word and deed daily.
So those who fear God and those who are Jews today that don’t know the Messiah is Jesus
They are a great audience to share the Gospel with.
To preach the Word of God to.
Those of you today who don’t know and Trust in Christ as your Savior
Are a great audience to preach the Gospel to
Becasue if you are fearful of what comes after this life.
Then you to need to know who Jesus Christ is.
And so listen to this History Paul Gives
In Verse 17 He points out that God delivered them from Slavery out of Egypt
And after that God was gracious to them Paul points out in Verse 18
18 And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
God truly is longsuffering
And gracious to the people of God through all their sins
Worshiping the Golden Calf ect.
And even through all these struggles
God gives them the inheritance that he promised them.
And that Shows us the character of God.
God can be trusted
God keeps promises to his people
Despite their Sins
Despite that they deserve Hell
God will redeem His people.
Paul Runs through some more of their History
They wanted a King like the other nations so they asked for Saul the son of Kish
A man after you see his life was a train wreck.
turning to fortune tellers at the end of his life.
This is what the heart of man does apart from the grace of God.
Instead of being content with being the people of God
Who’s King was invisible
God is a Spirit and they that worship him should worship him in both Spirit and truth
Not through a King here on earth.
But what is Pauls point here in Verses 22-23

And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’

23 Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.

Pauls point is that Saul could not save them
King David could not save them
the only man that could save them was the God Man
Israels Savior Jesus who came through the line of David.
Which was the promise of God that was fulfilled.
Paul then points out that John the Baptist pointed to this fact in Verses 24-25

Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

You see John called men to repentance as the last of the great prophets.
But John pointed to another
John pointed to Christ
He said I’m not even worthy to untie Jesus’s Sandals.
Why was this
What a strange phrase
Becasue the God of all creation took on flesh and was in their presence.
The sinless spotless lamb of God the one who when he appeared as the burning bush to Moses said take off your sandals because this is Holy ground.
Not because the ground was Holy
But because Christ is Holy
Christ was sinless
Jesus was God.
And this is where the History of the people of God leads
as Paul describes to them
All roads lead to Jesus.
Verses 26-43 is our Third point

Vs. 26-43 Proclaiming the Gospel to separate the Sheep from the Goats.

Lets read again verses 26-37

“Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.

Christ lived a perfect life
Christ Died for his elect who are sinners.
Christ was raised from the dead.
Christ was seen by many before ascending to the right hand of God the Father.
And so Paul declares this in verses 38-39

Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

39 and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses

Know one can keep Gods law perfectly
Only Jesus can and did keep the law perfectly.
And Paul and I will keep hammering this point
Becasue people who see the law of God say well I didn't swear today.
Children will say I obeyed mom and dad all day today.
But what about the day after that and the day after that.
I am truthful in my speech I only stretch the truth sometimes.
You know white lies
Know there is know such thing as white lies all deception is lying.
Christ says wives obey your husbands in the Lord
Have you done that perfectly this week
Husbands Christ says love your wives as Christ loves the church
Have you done that Perfectly this week.
You see we cannot be justified by the deeds of the Law
Only one the Man Christ Jesus could keep the Law perfectly for us.
And only through his blood are we healed.
Only by his righteous act are we saved.
Nothing but the Blood
Nothing but blood of Jesus
Can save you
Paul then warns what the prophets warned of in verses 40-43

40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers,

be astounded and perish;

for I am doing a work in your days,

a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ”

42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.

43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

You see many heard and believed
Many said this is this great news this is the Best news
This means we have a chance
It doesn't depend on me.
Its all of Christ
That is what his elect his sheep heard.
but verse 41 rings true as well
This is a work
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ”
If you are not one of Gods elect who was called before the foundation of the world.
Jesus could have told you the Gospel
Paul could tell you the Gospel
I could tell you the Gospel
But if your not of his flock
even though we tell you you cannot hear it
That is why there is a Hell for all those who are not called
For those because of Original Sin will continue in their sin.
And are content to do so.
Salvation to them does not sound like a great deal.
It sounds like drudgery.
For all those that cannot and will not except Christ because the Spirit of God has not enabled them to do so.
But we are called to Proclaim the Gospel despite the Results.
Do all who will listen because it is God who calls us
God who gives us a new heart Throught the Spirit
It is all of God
An God keeps his promises.
And that brings me to my 4th point for verses 44-52

Vs. 44-52 Proclaim the Gospel Despite the Results.

Lets read verses 44-45

The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.

45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.

It was all about who is in charge to them.
Who is Paul and who is this Jesus
We killed Him
He wasn't the messiah
We have the Law and the Prophets.
Come hear us.
But what does hearing the Law and the prophets do apart from Christ’s great work?
It bring death
It brings damnation.
It bring the wrath of God.
The Jews want these people to put back on there burdens and ignore the Savior of the World who gives life.
But Paul and Barnabas did proclaimed the Gospel Despite the results
but even the rejection of the word by many Jews had a purpose according to God.
Verses 46-48

46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

“ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles,

that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed

The Gentiles and all the Jews that Believed did what sheep do
They rejoiced at this Good News.
You mean Gentiles can come into the presence of the Lord.
You mean we don’t have to stay in the outer courts anymore
You mean I am no longer unclean
But rather I am clean because of the Blood of Christ.
Yes absolutely
Thats exactly what they preached
And that is as true today as it was then
all who here this good news and understand it are his sheep.
All those who think they will justify themselves by the law are headed to hell.
And unbelievers today usually react in the same way as they treated Paul and Barnubus in our text.
Because their hearts are uncoverted
veres 50-52
But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.
51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.
52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.1
The Goats the unbelievers say get out of hear
I don’t want to hear the Gospel
That doesn't sound pleasing to me.
And so many who hear will do the same to you today
get out of my face
I am not a sinner
thats just you imposing your man made religion on me.
I am doing pretty good on my own.
But when they do this and they will.
Shake off the dust of your sandals don’t cast your pearls amoung them swine anymore.
Rather go find some more swine that say after they have heard that Jesus saves sinners.
They say I want to hear more.
I believe what your saying
God has changed my heart
And I love Jesus now to.
And so with the sharing of the Gospel comes great reward whether people believe or if they don’t believe
thats what verse 52 teaches us
52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Why were they so Joyful
Becasue they suffered for righteousness
They were cast out of that town for sharing the good news
And because they shared the good news many were saved both Jews and Gentiles.
Many goats became sheep.
So that is what the apostles did they Proclaimed the Gospel Historically and Biblically
They didn’t stray from the truth
They preached the Gospel where people were reading the Bible
Do you know anyone or any churches in Wichita falls who Read the Bible but don’t understand the Gospel.
Go explain it to them.
Go explain the History of God’s people and what Jesus Did even though we are great sinners.
Go proclaim the Gospel to Separate the Goats from the Sheep.
And Proclaim the Gospel no matter the Results because the Goal is that Christ is glorified.
Invite them to church to hear the truth.
Invite your lost family members.
Invite your friends and relatives
That is how I was brought into the church.
I new of God
I new off the Bible
I had been taught parts of it when I was young.
But I had wandered off to false teaching by false religions.
But a brother in Christ kept inviting me to Church
every week
and he made the compelling argument of you can continue to learn more about the Word of God.
And I accepted because he invited and God moved me.
And Christ woke me up through faithful preaching that Christ Died for us
Christ lived a perfect life for us.
So let us brothers and sisters share in the great commission from our Lord.
And share the gospel that we have been taught by Jesus.
And we can share in his sufferings for sharing his Word and we can rejoice when new sheep are brought into the fold.
Let us pray to that end.
LETS Pray.
Father we thank you for this time to study and meditate on your Word
We ask that you would make this sermon meaningful in the minds of us your children.
Father we ask that we would be so on fire for you Lord that your Word and our time in it would be on our lips today
with our children and with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
We ask for all this in Christs name Amen
LET US RISE for the Singing of Gods Word
