John 8:3–6 KJV 1900
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
The Scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus
Exalting Jesus in John Jesus Acts with Authority (John 8:1–11)

They have a woman who was caught in the act of adultery. She is guilty with no reasonable doubt. Why did they think bringing this woman to Jesus would trap him? In their minds Jesus had set himself above the law in the past, and they thought he might do it again.

For example the Jews thought that Jesus was breaking the Law by healing the man. He didn’t Christ being the example setter was showing them what they should have been doing on the Sabbath.
But here the Law is cut and dry about adultery… A sin punishable by death.
The Pharisees, knowing the compassion of Christ were thinking that he might excuse her.
Jesus pays no mind but stoops down and with one statement shines light upon their sin. Only Jesus could have thrown the first stone and he didn’t.
So how could this have tripped up Jesus? After all she went free, but why?
The accusers said that she was caught in the ACT of adultery!
where was the man?
Under the Old Testament Law on which they based their charges (v. 5) required the punishment of BOTH parties!!
If she was caught in the act they could have brought the an as well! was the whole thing a set up?
I wonder if they may have payed off a man to entice her or if it could have even been one of them??
Leviticus 20:10 “And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
Deuteronomy 22:22 “If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.”
John 8:7–11 KJV 1900
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
