Written or at the very least compiled by Solomon. This makes sense because of what is found in. 1 Kings 4:23
Purpose: “To know wisdom and instruction”
To form our character.
v. 3-5
Wise dealing or being skillful. But skillful in what exactly?
-righteousness, justice, and equity. “The proverbs are meant to work on the character so that the reader is able to act in a way that is right, just, and fair.
Righteousness- fulfilling the demands of your relational obligations
Justice and equity- fairness and uprightness.
Who is the intended audience?
The simple- those who are not yet formed in their thinking, moral purpose, or direction in life.
Prudence-
The youth- While there are some here who are not young, I think that we all ought to lean into the truths here as a reminder.
v. 5
An exhortation to always seek to learn more. We ought to always desire for more information when we read God’s word, utilize resources so that you might best understand what the Holy Spirit would have for you to gather.
Additional intellectual purpose:
v. 6
This is more than just a riddle to make us think. Character is put to use but this wisdom cannot be utilized unless it is understood.
When we put these two purposes together, it simply means that the purpose of this book is to deliver wise character and then provide understanding on how exactly to put it to use.
v. 7 The Main Theme: Fear of the Lord
Solomon states here that the beginning of the knowledge that these proverbs offer is with a healthy respect for God. The fool, one without respect of God, despises wisdom and instruction.
