Luke 16:14-18

Theme: Jesus Speaks of A Rich Man
Key verse: v.8
31 verses; 752 words
Grade level: 4.7
Outline:
I. The Rich Man and the Steward. Verses 1-18
II. The Rich Man and the Beggar. Verses 19-31
Two THINGS that are most like oil and water:

I. The Legalists Presumption. v.14

14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
A detail.
“who were covetous”
Why are legalists miserable?
Because the things they are against they either can’t afford or can’t do because of keeping up appearances.
A deriding.
The result of their lifestyle is to attack what they really want to do.
People who ride hobby horses fall headlong into the thing they are against.

II. The Lord’s Precepts. v.15

Justification. v.15
15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Self justification.
It’s premise.
“Ye are they which justify yourselves before men”
It’s problem.
“but God knoweth your hearts”
Self justification is self condemnation.
“for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”
Old Testament Prophets. v.16
16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
A marked time.
“The law and the prophets were until John”
A manifested change.
“since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
The law. v.17
17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
According to some the Lord can’t keep His Book.
According to the Lord He does.
Psalm 12:6–7
6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.”
Carefree divorce. v.18
18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
Rules of Bible interpretation:
Never take Scripture out of context.
Never isolate Scripture in it’s context.
This verse with all the other teachings on divorce shows us God is against carefree divorce.
We can’t get along. Then both of you need to grow up.
We fell in love outside the marriage. It was lust.
I’ll have you know that God put us together. No, that’s not how God works.

Conclusion:

Your presumptions and God’s precepts are like oil and water.
Let the Lord Himself change your mind about this.
