“This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
This prayer is not only a great prayer but a great blueprint as well
it is also an amazing way we can live our lives as well.
I want to share some great prayers with you
Dear God, my Mom tells me that you have a reason for everything on Earth, I guess broccoli is one of your mysteries.
Please make my parents understand that if I don’t eat salad, I do better at school
Please forgive me for hiding my sister’s favorite doll…and please don’t tell her where it is.
Dear God, I need you to make my mom not allergic to cats. I really want a cat and I really don’t want to ask my mom to move out.
Dear God, when will my sister stop being annoying, I’m down to my last patience.
Dear God, I hope my dog is with you in Heaven, please take care of him…sorry if he chews on your sandals.
one of the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, we see this in Luke’s account
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
This is so telling, The disciples walked with Jesus saw him going off to pray, they could see the importance of prayer, and wanted to make sure they did not miss out on what Christ had.
Let’s break this prayer down.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
Let’s look at Father
First I understand that not everyone has a good relationship with their fathers, and I want you to know this, if that is you, I am so sorry, I understand that your dad might not have been the picture of Christ, in fact he might have been the opposite of what an example of God is. Know this though, if that is you, do not let that taint your view of who God is.
But the word father here is (Pot-tear) it is not the wording you might think it is closer to the Aramaic word Abba which when you translate it to english it is closer to (daddy) not how adults use it though, think about a you child that is calling out (Daddy, Daddy)
It shows accessible, loving parent
it is than immediately followed with “In Heaven” which balances this intimacy of “Pot-tear” with the affirmation of God’s sovereignty and majesty.
It is showing that yes he is loving and accessible But still God, Still powerful and Just, and should be given that reverence that God is worthy of.
When we start out this prayer we are acknowledging Who God is and reminding us of who He is.
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
The first part of the prayer is that of Who God is, and His Will
Here your Kingdom come your Will be down on earth as it is in Heaven, I love this part.
We are saying God let your Will be done,
He is not just in heaven hanging out, and is powerless here, but He is sovereign over all here and in Heaven
When I am praying this prayer alone, I take a moment here and ask God to help me not be a hinderance to His Will, but Help move His Will forward. That I would seek out His Will and be open to His Will.
We Need To Not Live For Greed
We Need To Not Live For Greed
Give us today our daily bread.
What are our needs, not our wants
I Want a new Shelby GT500/ I need Food
I Want a Playstation 5/ I need God’s Word
I Want a 1979 1 of 24 Boba Fett rocket firing prototype action figure mint in box/ What I need is what is necessary to fulfill God’s Will that He has laid out before me.
This prayer are for our needs not our greed
It is also interesting that Jesus chose Daily bread, it the day’s provision of life’s essentials as they recognize that all sustenance for one’s life comes from God and that he makes no long-term future guarantees.
The fact that Christ uses daily bread here is also telling, the Jewish disciples would have understood this reference, and most likely would have thought back to the Exodus
Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”
We need to understand that many times our wants and desires do not line up with God’s. God is more about our needs and what is needed to fulfill His will, and build our faith in Him, then a 1979 1 of 24 Boba Fett rocket firing prototype action figure mint in box
We Are Forgiven, And We Must Forgive Others
We Are Forgiven, And We Must Forgive Others
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
God made away for us to have a relationship with Him, He made a way that we can get forgiveness from our sins that separated us from Him.
When we mess up we did not lose our salvation, but when we sin we need to acknowledge it and repent from it.
Likewise, God tells us to forgive those who have wronged us. In fact, Christ had so pretty brutal language when taking about us forgiving others
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
“Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
“At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
“But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
“His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
“But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
I love this part of the prayer, it reminds me that God has forgiven me and I need to also forgive others.
We Need To Live In The Freedom That Christ Has Given Us
We Need To Live In The Freedom That Christ Has Given Us
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
This part of the prayer when you look back to the original language it’s more like Don’t let us succumb to temptation, or don’t abandon is to temptation.
We do fall periodically to temptation but it is never because we have no alternative
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Praying this prayer, is also the way we should be living our lives
Recognizing that God is our heavenly father that is sovereign and Holy
Living for His Will
Not living past our means and not filling our lives with useless distractions
forgiving others and living in the forgiveness that we have been given
seeking a way out of temptation
it is our Prayer and our lives.
