The Spirit Of Leviathan

Job 41:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? Or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? 2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? Or bore his jaw through with a thorn? 3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? Will he speak soft words unto thee? 4 Will he make a covenant with thee? Wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? 5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
Job 41:34 KJV 1900
34 He beholdeth all high things: He is a king over all the children of pride.
LEVIATHAN (לִוְיָתָן, liwyathan). One of the Hebrew names for the sea monster of ancient Near Eastern mythology that represented the forces of chaos held in check by the power of God. Sometimes rendered “sea monster” or “dragon” in modern English biblical translations.
Leviathan is mentioned by name six times in the Hebrew Bible (Job 3:8; 41:1; Pss 74:14; 104:26; Isa 27:1). Most of these passages assert or allude to Yahweh’s power and control over the sea monster. According to this passage,
Leviathan has fearsome teeth (Job 41:14) and impenetrable scales (Job 41:15–17); it breathes out fire and smoke (Job 41:18–21) and breaks through iron and bronze as though it were straw or rotting wood (Job 41:27). Warriors will retreat from Leviathan when all their weapons have proved useless against it (Job 41:25–29).
Psalm 104:26 KJV 1900
26 There go the ships: There is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.
Psalms 104:26b “whom thou hast made to play therein.”
Leviathan plays in the water, lurking deep in the midst of it. The water represents the Spirit, the moving of the Spirit. Jon 3:5 says you must be born again of the water and the Spirit. Revelation 22:1 says “He shewed me a pure river of water of life. Water is connected to the moving of the Spirit.
Where the Glory of God is you will always find Leviathan lurking causing mass confusion. Leviathan is a spirit of mass confusion and chaos. There is a blanket of mass confusion over our nation through many different social media outlets, news media. You will often find leviathan lurking around where the Glory and the light of God is shining brightest. If there is chaos or confusion it is caused by the acts of Leviathan muddying the waters of the spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 14:33 “33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
I believe God has called us to know the works of the enemy so that we are prepared. We need to know the different spirits of darkness at work to cause the children of God to go astray.
In Acts 16:16 the bible talks about a girl with the spirit of divination and in the greek the word divination is “Python” or the “spirit of python”. It’s important to identify a spirit so that we don’t work with it! Spirits are often identified as an animal and if we can learn the characteristics of that animal or spirit then we can learn how it works and how to defeat it.
Job-The True Church
Job’s life is a picture of the church. Jobs character in the beginning represents what the church is supposed to look like:
Job’s Character
a. “blameless”
This word was often used to describe a sacrificial animal that was “spotless and without blemish.” When used of a person it referred to personal integrity, not sinless perfection. Job was a man without overt blemishes on his public record. Whereas “blameless” does not mean guiltless, it does mean he is forgiven and consistently obedient. His reputation was impeccable.
b. “upright”
This word describes someone who is faithful to observe the law of God: just, fair, honest.
c. “feared God” and “shunned evil”—To “fear God” and to “shun evil” were a familiar pair in the OT (cf. Prov. 3:7; 14:16 [“the wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil”]; 16:6). These phrases refer to someone whose loving reverence and holy awe of God lead him/her to hate and turn away from sin.
When we move in the Spirit and live a life that is blameless before god, Upright, shunning evil in the fear of God. We are used by God in mighty ways!
Oh that that we would launch out and allow God to use us! He can use us in the gifts of the Spirit with the fruit of the spirit showing out of every fiber of our being. Defeating the enemy in every way! What a mighty God we serve!
Leviathan
Leviathan is the Spirit of religious pride! Leviathan only attacks the church! Lurking in the moving of the Spirit! Leviathan can be recognized by his characteristics:
He twists. He Twists the truth. He twists things that we know to be true and twists the word of truth to appeal to its selfish desires. Taking scripture out of context to uphold man made doctrines and traditions. He twists intentions and conversations.
He brakes. He brakes covenants, Ministries and marriages. He likes to cause division and destroy covenants or vows between God and people. He is responsible for divorce, break-ups, separation and division. He hates covenants! His goal is to sever you relationship with God.
His heart as firm as stone. Leviathan is very stubborn and cold hearted. You feel as though you are constantly at war. A Leviathan spirit often has a hard heart of un-forgiveness always blaming others never taking responsibility for his actions. Stiff-necked!
He boils the water turning and twisting muddying the pureness of the true moving of God. He often attacks leadership. Lifting them up to destroy them. He usually gets as many people involved as possible to destroy. Leviathan likes to humiliate in front of an audience. To crush and to break in pieces his prey!
He is the very embodiment of chaos and confusion. Proud and arrogant, the king of pride. Leviathan will make you question your own relationship with God.
He causes you to walk in spiritual error. Not being able to hear the Holy Spirit. His scales are as shields to keep out what is holy, right, and good! Pride becomes the guiding light of this spirit. Blocking the leadership of righteousness.
He causes fear. Leviathan makes you feel insignificant and causes depression. His desire is to keep you silent, to shut your mouth. To keep you in fear and a feeling of insignificance. He likes control and especially to control your voice, to silence you. Dealing with this spirit you have no “say so” your words or actions do not matter, only his matters. No decision is made without his direction. You are afraid to make decisions because of him and everything you do or say is wrong. If you try to confront Leviathan “out of his mouth goeth burning lamps”.
When men and women are moved by the Spirit, to be used by God in mighty ways there is leviathan lurking waiting for the right opportunity to strike with his deadly fearsome teeth. Leviathan is the very embodiment of pride in every way. Job 41:34 “34 He beholdeth all high things: He is a king over all the children of pride.”
Leviathan sinks his teeth in and causes people to rise up above all that is holy, all that is good, all that is God!
This spirit attacks everything that is Holy! Here is one example of Leviathan at work:
Luke 18:11-12
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
With the Spirit of Leviathan we become holier than all who are around us. Thinking that we are closer to God than those around us. With this kind of pride the sins of others are highlighted and become our focus. Our prayers and actions begin to change into righteous indignation toward those we love, those we are acquainted with every day. We become forceful and harsh to those around us. We then have religious pride, Leviathan pride!
It’s the kind of pride that also tells you that you don’t need to pray. Individuals and Whole church congregations suffer the spirit of leviathan in this way.
When we needed God before we were prosperous, before we were blessed, before God turned things around for us, we prayed and then when God blessed we decided that we didn’t need to pray any more. How many of you started off praying and then all of a sudden the things of life became more important than prayer.
I need Prayer! I need that communion with God! I need that relationship with Him! I can do nothing with out God!
This kind of pride makes you high minded. This kind of pride gives you a false since of godliness. You think you are moving for God but you are actually moving for self gain. We learn in Jude 16:
Jude 16 NASB 2020
16 These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.
Enoch prophesied in Jude 14–15 “14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Only God Can defeat Leviathan!
Isaiah 27:1 KJV 1900
1 In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword Shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, Even leviathan that crooked serpent; And he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.
God asked Job in, Job 41:1 “1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? Or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?”
God is telling Job that he cannot defeat Leviathan.
We can not defeat Leviathan on our own. Nothing we have can defeat Him. The bible says in Job 41:25 “25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: By reason of breakings they purify themselves.” Job 41:29 “29 Darts are counted as stubble: He laugheth at the shaking of a spear.”
Everything you try will fail against the spirit of Leviathan!
What will defeat him? The bible says “the Lord with is sore and great and strong Sword shall punish Leviathan!
The sword is his word! When David met Goliath he met the spirit of Leviathan speaking through the giant. The giant caused mass confusion when he spoke against the armies of God causing chaos and fear. David asked a question, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine?” circumcision represented a covenant. Anyone uncircumcised was not in covenant with God. Leviathan comes against the covenant of God in your life. It will take a covenant word and act to defeat him. David declared “you come with a spear and a sword, but I come in the name of the Lord!” Thats covenant talk, thats covenant action!
A covenant word is a vow to God. A vow is an act toward God, through God, and for God. What is the act that defeats Leviathan? What does it look like to come in the power, authority and character of the Word? (In the name of the Lord!)
There Is A Way!
Jesus left us an example and a way to defeat Leviathan in our lives, in our church! We must humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God. We must submit to Him and Him alone! We must follow His example when we feel Leviathan creeping upon us with His craftiness to cause confusion with pride!
We read in in Psalm 74:14“14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, And gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.”
Can I tell you this morning that God is going turn what the enemy ment to destroy you around and will use it to strengthen you.
We get nourishment from the food we eat! Leviathan will be “meat to the people” because of Gods strength and power Leviathan will be destroyed off of your life!
In John we learn how to defeat Leviathan!
John 13:4–5 KJV 1900
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
After He ate he rose up and girded himself with a towel and began to wash the disciples feet.
Jesus knew that Judas was going to betray Him and yet he washed his feet.
Jesus knew that Peter was going to deny Him three times and yet He washed His feet.
Jesus said:
John 13:13–15 KJV 1900
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
CON:Jesus is the way to defeat Leviathan off of your life. Let Him wash you and clean you of this religious spirit, this spirit of pride, this spirit of confusion and chaos! Let Him raise you up in His glory! Let Hime return your focus to Him! Let Him destroy the heart of Pride! Let him destroy the chaos of leviathan!
