Deuteronomy 6:1–2 (ESV) — 1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.

Deuteronomy 6:1–2 ESV

The fear of the Lord is a way of thinking; it is an attitude of mind. Fear of the Lord must be learned from generation to generation. It is not an experience that can be remembered but is rather a response of humility and obedience.[1]

II. IT IS A GIFT, IT IS LEARNED, AND IT IS A CHOICE

Isaiah 11:2–3 (ESV) — 2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

Fear of the Lord is the central maxim of each of the wisdom books. Whatever be the questions of life, the response must begin with the fear of the Lord experienced at the mountain…Even more dangerous than such practices as these is failure to fear the Lord and to obey the words written by the finger of God. Violence to human society is the most pernicious perpetrator of death, all of it resulting from a failure to fear God.[2]
Acts 9:31 (ESV) — 31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.
Acts 9:31 ESV
31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.
