Sermon Outline for Trinity Sunday based on Isaiah 6:1-8
I. Commercial: “Thanks! I needed that!”
II. Isaiah’s vision of the Lord and seraphim.
III. Isaiah is a man of unclean lips.
IV. We are people of unclean lips, too.
V. Vision of a burning coal touching Isaiah’s lips to atone for his sins. Isaiah 6:5–7 “And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.””
VI. Our sins are atoned for through the mercy of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
VII. Words from Isaiah in 53:3-6 about the Suffering Servant, Jesus. Isaiah 53:3–6 “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
VIII. Each time we repent of our sins we can think about the words of the commercial, “Thanks! I needed that!” Isaiah 6:8 “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.””
