Sermon Text: Isaiah 6:1-8
Sermon Theme: Holy, Holy, Holy is our Triune God
Let us pray: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Amen.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
You might remember the TV Commercial from the 1970s that featured a man slapping both sides of his face with something called skin bracer and saying, “Thanks. I needed that.” The idea was that if you slapped on this product, then you would wake up and be ready for the rest of the day.
The prophet Isaiah also had a wake-up call in his life. This was the year that King Uzziah died. King Uzziah was one of the better kings of the southern kingdom of Judah. He reigned for 52 years, but the end of his reign as king he was afflicted with the skin disease of leprosy. His son ruled then, since the leprosy caused King Uzziah to be away from people who feared they might get the disease, too. King Uzziah died and Isaiah was sad. He saw a special vision He saw a special vision of fiery angel kind of creatures. They were called Seraphim and they had six wings. Two wings covered their faces. Two wings covered their feet. Two wings were used to fly. They said to one another according to Isaiah 6:3, “And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!’”
Isaiah knew that he was unworthy to be a prophet of the Lord. He called himself a man of unclean lips. He knew that he was living in the midst of a people of unclean lips. Isaiah did not feel worthy to be a spokesman for the Lord.
We also are people with unclean lips. We too live among people with unclean lips. We do not always use our lips to thank and praise and worship the Lord. We sometimes say mean things to others. The people around us do not use their lips for good things all of the time either. If you talk to people about President Biden or former President Trump, then you will hear many people make strong statements for or against one or the other.
Isaiah was changed by his vision of the Lord. Isaiah 6:6-8 tells us, “And (Isaiah) said: ‘Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: ‘Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.’”
We are changed by the mercy of our Triune God. Without our Triune God’s forgiveness, we would be lost forever in our sins and wrongs. God the Father loved us so much that He sent God the Son, Jesus, to live the perfect life for us and to die the perfect death for us. God the Father showed His stamp of approval on the saving work of God the Son by raising Him from the dead on the third day. God the Father and God the Son sent God the Holy Spirit to give people saving faith and to change the unclean lips of people into clean lips that thank and praise and worship the Triune God.
The words of Isaiah the prophet in Isaiah 53:3-6 point us to the saving work of Jesus the Son of God. Those verses tell us, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Because of the Suffering Servant, Jesus, God’s Son, we are saved from the sins of our unclean lips and selfishness. Because of Jesus we can use our lips to tell people about the love of God the Father that sent God the Son to save us from our sins and wrongs. Because of Jesus we can worship and praise and thank God today and every day.
Each time we repent in sadness over our many sins and wrongs we can remember the commercial from the 1970s and say to our Triune God that He is holy, holy, holy and thanks I needed that! Amen.
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
