Opening Sermon Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
As we gather today, we seek Your guidance in building godly homes rooted in Your Word. Help us understand the importance of training our children in Your ways, instilling discipline and love. Grant us wisdom as we immerse them in Scripture and teach them to defend their faith.
Thank You for the blessing of children, and give us strength to fulfill our responsibility in their moral and spiritual development. May our discipline reflect Your love and produce righteousness.
Lastly, help us continually share Your plan of salvation with our children and live out the Gospel in our lives.
In Your name we pray,
Amen.
This morning, we continue our sermon series, "Foundations for the Family: Building Godly Homes," where we are exploring the essential principles and practices for nurturing a home rooted in God's Word. The key word there is WORD!
Over the past few weeks, we've looked closer into the foundational elements that create strong, faith-filled families.
We've discussed the importance of a Marriage Lived for the Glory of God, looking closer at the blueprint for a Godly marriage, as well as how God wants us to communicate with each other will words of grace and acts of love.
Today, we reach the fourth sermon in our series, where we turn our focus to one of the most significant aspects of building a godly home: raising our children in the way of the Lord.
We are going to explore three major points: the foundation of Scripture in parenting, the blessing and responsibility of godly parenting, and the role of discipline within Godly parenting
1. The Foundation of Scripture in Parenting
1. The Foundation of Scripture in Parenting
As I said at the beginning the key word is WORD, we as parents need to recognize that the Word of God is the cornerstone of effective parenting. 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us,
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Immersing our children in the truths of Scripture is essential. It shows them the way for salvation, equips them for good works, and fortifies them against the secular influences they will encounter.
15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
This verse emphasizes that from infancy, children should be acquainted with the Holy Scriptures, which can make them wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Parents need to be the active participate in leading they child to Christ. Don’t think that it is anyone else responsibility to lead them to the one who loves them the most.
Additionally, 1 Peter 3:15 urges us to always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks us the reason for our hope. Once our child is safe in the arms of Jesus, and we see signs of the working of the Holy Spirit in their life we need to begin to disciple them further in the faith in order to prepare them to defend their faith in Christ.
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
By teaching our children Scripture, we are equipping them to defend their faith confidently. (Testimony about my son at WBU) So prepare them which lead us to the second major point that this it is your God given responsibility to do so.
2. The Blessing and Responsibility of Godly Parenting
2. The Blessing and Responsibility of Godly Parenting
Children are a blessing from the Lord. Psalm 127:3 tells us,
Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
With this blessing comes a profound responsibility. Parents you are responsible for the moral, spiritual development of your children.
In Deuteronomy 6:7-9 Moses instructs the Israelites to impress God’s commands upon their children. He says,
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Teaching our children the importance of obedience towards God has everlasting effects. Trust God to save you and be obedient to His words, direction and perfect will for your life. Teach that to your children. Teach by example...
3. The Role of Discipline within Godly Parenting
3. The Role of Discipline within Godly Parenting
Discipline is a critical aspect of raising godly children. Proverbs 3:12 reminds us that “the LORD disciplines those He loves.”
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
Discipline should not be taken lightly or cause disheartenment, as Hebrews 12:5-6 explains that the Lord disciplines everyone He accepts as a son.
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
This discipline is for our good, so that we may share in His holiness (Hebrews 12:10)
10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.
When we discipline our children, they gain wisdom, as stated in Proverbs 29:15
15 The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
They also bring us peace and respect, as noted in Proverbs 29:17
17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.
and Hebrews 12:9
9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?
Even young children can understand that discipline is rooted in love.
Children who grow up without discipline often feel unloved and are more likely to disobey authority.
Proverbs 13:24, 22:15, and 23:13-14 support physical discipline when rightly administered, though it may seem unpleasant at the time, it ultimately produces “a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” Hebrews 12:11
11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Can you see the reasoning behind discipline, it is meant to help, not harm, to guide not mistreat, to show the correct way in love not be abusive and harsh. When discipline is done in a Godly Biblical manner it can produce fruits of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Conclusion
Know let me conclude this morning by sharing with you the plan of God’s salvation. This is the plan we must tell to our children over and over again. This is the plan we ourselves need to live out in our life. Our life needs to be viewed in light of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Recognize that it is your sinful nature that separates you for God
Realize that there is no moral good you can do that can wash you clean or change your dead lost heart
Repent and turn to God the Father by coming through His Son (John14.6)
Recieve the free gift of God’s grace offered to all who will believe and faith in Christ Jesus.
