Final lesson of our May Series: Understanding God’s Word
Today we will focus on the Sword of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:17 ESV
and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
Lesson Highlight: The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, equips us for spiritual battle and empowers us to overcome the enemy.

1. Understanding the Sword of the Spirit

Definition
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Sword is active and living - not displayed on the wall to be simply be admired a part of a collection
Purpose of the Sword
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2. Power of the Sword

Primary offensive weapon for the Child of God against the enemy (Satan, the flesh, and the world)
Jesus tempted in the desert (Matthew 4)
The Word Brings Light and Truth
Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Weapon of Prayer and Scripture
Ephesians 6:18 ESV
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

3. Consequences of Ignoring or Misusing the Sword

Vulnerability to Spiritual Attacks
Hosea 4:6 ESV
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Inadequacy in Times of Trial
Proverbs 30:5 ESV
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
HOW NOT TO READ THE BIBLE
Step 1: Find a verse you think justifies your beliefs
Step 2: Ignore all other verses around it
Step 3: Fight any urge to understand the authors’s intended meaning
Step 4: Apply your meaning to the verse
People are OK with the Truth as long as it doesn’t correct, affect, change or disturb the way they thing, feel, live or act.

CONCLUSION
Embrace the Word
Joshua 1:8 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Let us commit to wielding the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, in our lives daily, allowing it to guide us, protect us, and empower us in our walk with the Lord.
