I. A Confused Beginning vs. 6-15
I. A Confused Beginning vs. 6-15
A. The time that the Samaritan woman went to get water was about 6:00 PM. This was when most women were preparing the evening meal. She did this to avoid people (especially women) who gossiped about her and shunned her.
B. Jesus broke 2 social protocols here. A Jewish man speaking to a woman in public. As well as a Jew addressing a Samaritan. (Old Jewish prayer ex). Jesus doesn’t care about our prejudices and social protocols, He cares about people. More importantly about our souls.
C. Jesus confuses the woman by talking about something spiritual, which was off topic at the moment. The woman confuses what He means by living water and thinks of not dealing with the harshness of her reality.
D. Everyone has something in their life that is harsh and that hurts to some degree. Things we would rather not deal with. Yet, we must handle things head on, more often then not.
II. A Sin Exposed vs. 16-24
II. A Sin Exposed vs. 16-24
A. Jesus then rips open the dirty little not so secret of this woman’s life. While we can hide sin from others, it will eventually have to be dealt with. Nothing is hidden from God. He knows all about us. Especially, the things we’d like to hide.
B. Startled, and trapped the woman switches subjects thinking she is diverting attention from her sins. However, worship has everything to do with our sins. (Distracting questions vs. real questions ex).
C. The Samaritans had a temple on Mt. Gerazim. They only accepted a modified version of the first 5 books of the Bible. So, when Jesus says that they do not know what they worship, He is saying they are worshipping an idol.
D. When Jesus says woman, it is the social equivalent of ma’am. Jesus never treated women with disrespect. He is lovingly telling her a hard truth.
E. Spirit and truth. Spirit without truth is frenzied emotionalism. Truth without emotion is dead orthodoxy. We need good, deep, sound doctrine, rooted in the Bible. We also need deep emotions that feels what we believe. “The modern church is producing passionate people with empty heads who love the Jesus they don’t know very well”- Voddie Baucham.
F. Our problem is this, we ping pong from one extreme to the other, and/or settle into one place. Hence, why we have social media post where people will talk about praising God, then cussing people.
G. If we stay purposefully, belligerently living in a sinful lifestyle, Jesus ain’t going to understand that like you want Him to. Jesus will understand that you have worshipped yourself, thinking you were worshipping Him. Isa. 29:13
And so the Lord says,
“These people say they are mine.
They honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
And their worship of me
is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.
III. A Convert Made vs. 25-30
III. A Convert Made vs. 25-30
A. The good news is you can leave it all behind, whatever “it” is, and come to Jesus. That’s what the Samaritan woman did.
B. The Samaritan woman went to the people she had avoided, and told them about Jesus. Who do you need to forgive, and share Jesus with!
C. Maybe, there is unconfessed sin in your life, and you need to deal with it head on. Come to Jesus.
