Partakers of the Divine Nature
as I come forward at end of worship
SLIDE 1 “WELCOME”
encouraging words from worship
many of us spend times on the road
bumper or window stickers
SLIDE 2 “CROSS = MERCY”
like everything changes at this point
instruments of righteousness on this earth
I am so amazed at creation and nature - the outdoors
this also is a time of the year for many weddings
God’s Spirit at weddings
At the cross is when we became partakers in the Divine nature
Just stop and think about that for a moment
SLIDE 3 “PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE”
Think about Peter and his experiences with our Lord
All that he got to witness and see....... through Jesus made evident the supernatural or divine things in a harsh environment
But what really changed it all for Peter was the cross.........which yes Peter so experienced the mercy in that
Look with me in 2nd Peter 1.
SLIDE 4
2 Peter 1:1 NASB95
1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
Now keep in mind Cross = Mercy
Everything changed here
SLIDE 5 “CROSS = MERCY”
Everything still changes here
Remember I talked about in “To Gaze Upon the Beauty of the Lord”
What is the one of the first things the Lord does when we experience His presence
God Re-establishes Our Position
When Christ came to earth, He exercised the dominion that Adam lost. Christ ruled over the fish (Luke 5:1–6; Matt. 17:24–27; John 21:1–6), over the fowl (Luke 22:34), and over the beasts (Mark 1:13; 11:1–7). No one on earth today could control nature the way He did. When Jesus came to earth, it was God “visiting” men (Ps. 8:4 with Luke 1:68, 78).
by humbling Himself and becoming a servant and dying on the cross, Jesus glorified God and purchased the salvation of a lost people and a lost world.
Partakers in Divine Nature......look back at the first verse
SLIDE 6
2 Peter 1:1 NASB95
1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
we have received a faith ......at the cross same as Peter and the others he is talking of here
Not by anything of our own doing.....except bow the knee.....at the cross........= mercy
Look at the verse....the faith we received by who’s righteousness? The righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ
At the cross we receive mercy.......but also a re-establishment of position.....with the divine.......as bond servants......we see that as Peter describes us here in this verse.
The very first thing he talks of is position
What is a bond servant?
SLIDE 7
BOND SERVANT - one who gives himself up to another’s will those whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing His cause among men.
That’s what happens here
SLIDE 8 “CROSS = MERCY”
The re-positioning with the divine
SLIDE 9 “KNEEL AT THE CROSS”
And I’m talking no room for pride here....no room for your own efforts .....or your own righteousness.....this is like all Him and no me.
There is too much me in this picture.....it has to be more like this
SLIDE 10 “KNEEL AT CROSS - SMALLER ME”
The re-establishment of the position in the divine
You may be thinking wow yes I’m reestablished.......my position again safe in the kingdom and divine nature
But what we also need to be encouraged in is this..............Everything gets re-arranged around us also
Peter proves that here in verse 2
SLIDE 11
2 Peter 1:2 NASB95
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
Not just affecting you but everything around you
Not just grace and peace on us but multiplied......when what? that knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord
Verse 3 carries on with verse 2 but I left it off on purpose to now add
SLIDE 12
2 Peter 1:2–3 NASB95
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
SLIDE 13
GRACE - of the merciful kindness of God…exerts His Holy influence upon our souls....turns us to Christ....keeps us and strengthens us
PEACE- of Christianity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is.
SLIDE 14
2 Peter 1:4 (NASB95)
4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
WORSHIP TEAM COME
A repositioning takes place
Not with just us .....but everything around us
Everyone paying attention....close your eyes and listen to this
If anybody in the early church knew the importance of being alert, it was the Apostle Peter. He had a tendency in his early years to feel overconfident when danger was near and to overlook the Master’s warnings. He rushed ahead when he should have waited; he slept when he should have prayed; he talked when he should have listened. He was a courageous, but careless, Christian.
