Read Proverbs 18:1
Proverbs 18:1 ESV
1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.
Friendship is neccessary
The best way for sin to come an devour us is when we are on our own
i know it can feel lonely in this unchristian world but remember this and for those of you who didtn join us on Wednesday know this
1 Peter 5:8–9 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
We can take heart because we are not alone in this life
And we shouldn’t be
The cliche Christianity is a team sport holds true
We need to life together
Hebrews reminds us of this as well
Hebrews 10:24–25 ESV
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Acts 2 has examples of this and so on
The bible is clear we shouldnt do this alone we need people we need friends good friends
Proverbs 18:1 ESV
1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.
We will encourage you in this throughout your time in youth ministry then as well on your way out of youth ministry
Do not go it alone
Find good friends
So what is a good friend

A good friend is consistent

Proverbs 17:17 ESV
17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
True friends are always there
Through thick and thin
True friends will love at all times
In the most difficult of time friends become brothers
I remind my kids all the time the only people who have to love them are eachother
our siblings will be around for our lifetime and thats awesome
but what’s better is the friend who stands with you through hard times
These friends become siblings
Most people will distance when bad things happen
Its our natural reaction
we pull back we dont want to get what they have
Think of Job’s friends
They were good for a while then they started to loose it
its hard to suffer with a friend
So be the friend that sticks around
BUT ALSO BE THE FRIEND THAT ALLOWS OTHERS TO STICK AROUND
Remember Proverbs 18:1 “1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.”
Good friend stick around and keep others around

Good friends are few

Proverbs 18:24 ESV
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
This sounds almost counter to our theme verse here
But this isnt I’ve heard more often the people with all the friends are the ones who feel most isolated

Good friends tell the truth

Proverbs 27:5–6 ESV
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend
Sometimes our friends will hurt our feelings
and that hurts sometimes worse than mean words from someone else
But we often consider them more
We think about them more
a true friend who use rebuke in the right way can help us grow
Proverbs 27:17 ESV
17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
the proverbs are full of advice to be weary of having many friends they may only be looking to take from you
Proverbs 14:20 ESV
20 The poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the rich has many friends.
Proverbs 19:4 ESV
4 Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.
Proverbs 19:6 ESV
6 Many seek the favor of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.
Proverbs 19:7 ESV
7 All a poor man’s brothers hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues them with words, but does not have them.
But look for those few friends whose wounds are faithful
Life giving in fact
Profuse are the kisses of an enemy
If your friends wont be honest with you find new ones
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
