What is a Soul?
What is a Soul?
News article talking about ghostly spirits
Genesis 2:7 (AV 1873)
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
What is the breath of life?
Job 27:3 (AV 1873)
3 All the while my breath is in me, And the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
Breath = Spirit
Dust (Body) + Breath (Spirit) = Living Soul
Lightbulb + Electricity = Light
What happens if the electricity is cut off from the lightbulb?
James 2:26 (AV 1873)
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Psalm 104:29 (AV 1873)
29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: Thou takest away their breath [spirit], they die, And return to their dust.
Genesis 25:8 (AV 1873)
8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Death is Referred to as Sleep
Death is Referred to as Sleep
3 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
24 he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
Dead are Unconscious
Dead are Unconscious
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: In the grave who shall give thee thanks?
12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? And thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
17 The dead praise not the Lord, Neither any that go down into silence.
4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; In that very day his thoughts perish.
18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: They that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.
Everyone Is “Asleep” Until the Resurrection
Everyone Is “Asleep” Until the Resurrection
10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? 11 As the waters fail from the sea, And the flood decayeth and drieth up: 12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be raised out of their sleep.
25 For I know that my Redeemer liveth, And that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, Yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, And mine eyes shall behold, and not another; Though my reins be consumed within me.
15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
19 Thy dead men shall live, Together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: For thy dew is as the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead.
2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 35 but they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
10 that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Is the resurrection a spiritual event that happens when we die?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
18 who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
Example of Jesus
Example of Jesus
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Jesus didn’t go to heaven when He died. He went to heaven after His bodily resurrection.
Example of David
Example of David
10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
When does the Resurrection Occur?
When does the Resurrection Occur?
39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–17 (AV 1873)
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
