Title-

Genesis 19 Sodoms depravity
recap
The Lord has again promised Abraham that Sarah will have a child
He appeared to Abraham with two Angels
And when He told this to Abraham Sarah Laughed.
because she was so old…
issac Her sons name will mean laughter because of this
Here we see the mighty words uttered by the pre incarnate Jesus
pre incarnate - before He was born into this world
He takes on the form of a man and says is anything too hard for the Lord.
the answer is no...
He spoke life into existance..
After this the Lord looks to the city Sodom
and implies He is going there to destroy it,
Abraham knows his nephew lot is there from ch 12-14- where Lot chose to settle near the wicked city..
Abraham intercedes
if 50 righteous are there
goes down all the way to 10
the Lord says yes.. if there are 10 righteous I will spare it.
but there is not even 10
Now we get the story of How the angels rescue Lot and How God destroys the city.
Starting in verse 1- 3
Lot moved His family, servants and goods near the city of Sodom.
He has now made his way into the city
He is even an official of the city, as the authoritative figures often sat at the gate to judge disputes in the town
Lot sees the angels and offers them to stay at his home.
This culture is big on hospitality..
When Lot saw the angels He was led to try to protect them..
mainly He new they were in a wicked city and may be murdered and treated poorly if they stayed the night in the town.
He eventually got them to comply and offered to prepare a meal, and give them comfort..
read 4 -5
The wicked people of the town were so wicked
that they surrounded the house and demanded to have Lot bring them out so that they could
know them carnally
homosexually rape them
Q. What would your response be?
Remember that hospitality was a big deal in this culture, and I wonder what else may have been revealed to Lot about who these men were...
So we see what Lot does in verse
6-9
Lot does the unthinkable
He offers them His two daughters instead…
there are many reasons as to people think why he did this...
Some think it is because women had such a low place in society prior to Jesus.
others say He was afraid for His life.
even others say that he was buying time…
Whatever his reason it shows that He was a wicked man in his own right.
Just as wicked as the men who were at the door.
and it leads us to believe there were no people who were righteous in this town.
yet because of Gods faithfulness and love for Abraham, He came to save Lot and His family...
What can we learn about this from Lot?
He was a compromiser..
He got closer and closer to Sodom
until he started looking and acting
just like the people in the town.
Brings us to our first point.

Dont compromise your faith and convictions

Q. How many of you feel like you compromise your faith sometimes.
You can get so closely affiliated with the sin of world that you start looking more like the world than you do like Christ
James 4:4 NKJV
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Q. What does it mean to be a friend of the world?
The world loves sin
billie ellish - lunch
greedy for money
sexual immorality
it always starts with a little bit of sin
and then it starts to get comfortable
and then you can end up like lot
living in sin and looking just like the people who hate God.
We see the opposite in Abraham,
He stayed close to God.
He was faithful,
and kept communion with Him
The best way to keep unstained from the world and sin is to stay close to God…
We continue on in verse 10
10-11
The angels pull Lot back into the house
and supernaturally blind the men who were then going to rape and kill Lot.
Certainly the wicked men were stunned and amazed…
now how amazed are you at this story right now...
There are people like this all over the world.
in jerusalem with hamas
the did this just a few months ago...
this is highlighting the depravity of mankind,
the same stuff that drew God to destroy the world with the flood
and the same stuff that I am anticipating the judgment to come to the earth for...
Sodom was known for homosexuality..
look what the bible says about homosexuality
it is rebuked in the same verses that rebuke sex with animals and incest.
Its a grave sin and it is an abomination to the Lord
yet it is so heavily celebrated in this country and in the world.
you will see this as June is pride month…
I boycott all the stores during this month that I can.
Do not support this agenda
However dont let this keep you from loving these people.
You can stand against it and still love them..
Share Jesus with them with the understanding that it is sin....
but let me warn you that sexual immorality comes in many shapes and sizes...
Just as much lets fight against sex prior to marriage
pornography..
dressing prevoctively to attract the opposite sex...
looking at women and men in a way as to undress them with your eyes....
For sexual immorality is condemned by God..
If your struggling in this area
bring it to the Lord with seriousness
and an understanding that by faith you are forgiven of your sin
and by faith you can overcome it..
Now the angels continue to give instruction to Lot..
read 12-14
Lot was instructed to gather his family
for the Lord sent the angels to utterly destroy it..
When Lot warns his son inlaws
they think he is joking
This leads me to wonder why...
it also reminds me of when I tell someone about Jesus and they laugh it off..
The son in laws refuse to head the warning as Lot is preparing to escape..
starting up again in verse 15 -17
Here we see Gods Judgment and mercy
punish city for wickedness
yet be merciful to His people
the people of promise
the people of Abraham
verse 18-22
Lot and His family escape and He asks the angels
hey can I go to the small city instead of the wilderness
The angels reply is yes
yet I can not destroy the city until you are safe
23-26
Gods excersizes judgment on Sodom and Gomorah through fire and brimstone..
now earlier the angels told them specifically,
dont look back
Lots wife could not help herself and when in the town She looked back at
what she loved most
and How it was all destroyed and Gone
In this because her heart was still set on her old life
God judged her and turned her into a pillar of salt..
this leads us to our next point
When God delivers you

Dont look back

1 John 2:16 NKJV
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
we are continually tempted to follow after the sins of the world...
When you get saved, you will be continually tempted to run back to your old sin
what we can learn from this is that the old sin will actually kill you.
it leads to physical and spiritual death.
You always here how teenagers are depressed
and how they have anxiety disorders
I have found that when I have been depressed it has been closely associated with sin in my life.
wether it was drugs or alcohol
sexual immorality
finding value in relationships
laziness
disobedience
rebellion
it all leads to a lack of peace..
when you get saved, dont look back to the sinful things that so many people love to live in..
it will only lead to turmoil..
if your in a place where you dont have peace, try turning away from your sin and keep your eyes pointed to Jesus.
27-29
We are reminded that God saved Lot out of Love for Abraham
Im sure Abraham looked on with amazment and shock as we see one of the greatest judgments in the bible.
This is a reminder that we have the same God
He is going to judge all sin in this way
This is why we need jesus
This is why we need the gospel..
in closing we will see the utter effects of living in a sinful condition..
30-37
we see incest in the depravity of Lots family
His wife turned back to sodom and was judged
His daughters got him drunk and seduced him
in order to have children....
the bible is very real about the history.
The writers are not sugar coating anything…
in these characters we see the sinfulness of mankind and the need for a savior

abiding in sin will Change you

but abiding in Christ will also change you
Choose today where you will abide
