The Athanasian Creed, which we confess, begins this way, “Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold the catholic faith. Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will without doubt perish eternally. And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. The Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is another.” This means that, the Father has begotten the Son from eternity; the Son is begotten of the Father from eternity; the Holy Spirit from eternity proceeds from the Father and the Son. To the Father especially is ascribed the work of creation; to the Son, the work of redemption, to the Holy Spirit, the work of sanctification as described in the articles of the Apostles’ Creed.
