Text: Zech. 12:10-13:1.
Intro: In a good story, a wonderful tactic called foreshadowing is implemented. Foreshadowing happens when the author gives tiny breadcrumbs throughout the story, sometimes unnoticeable at first, that give hints about what is going to happen in the future of the story. When you don’t notice these foreshadowing instances at first, you will most likely notice them after finishing a story and going through it again. You’ll notice more things the second and third time around that point toward the climax or conclusion of the story and those are always sweet and satisfying to see.
Good examples of foreshadowing include back to the future Part 3, where Marty McFly uses the bullet proof vest idea to stop a bullet shot at him by Mad Dog Tannon. That same idea was used in a movie called Clint Eastwood’s a Fist Full of Dollars. A movie that Biff Tannon was watching in the previous movie before Marty turns it off, surprising Biff.
In Star Wars Episode 2, Obi-Wan-Kenobi jokingly says to Anakin Skywalker, “Why do I get the feeling you’ll be the death of me”. Something that actually happens in Episode 4 when Darth Vader Kills Obi-Wan.
In Wizard of Oz, Before Dorthy goes off to Oz, The Farmhands take turns saying something. Hunk says Dorthy’s head isnt made of straw (Scarecrow). Hickory asserts that one day the town will make a statue in his honor (Tin Man). and Zeke got really scared when Dorthy fell into the Pigs corral, even though he talked tough (Lion).
The Bible itself has many, many foreshadowing instances.
some you dont even notice until after you go back through
The OT is all about Jesus
Zechariah, as hard as it is to understand, has Jesus everywhere.

Vs 10, Me Who They Pierced
From Victory to Weeping
Spirit poured out
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Did it happen?
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Pierced
Daqar - pierced through, to stab, cut or make a way through.

used a lot for death, Num. 25:8, Zech. 13:3.
But who is it?
sick of hearing about pronouns, but in grammar they are important
Who’s speaking? Zech. 12:1
“Me.....Him.....Him”
“Me.....Him.....Him”
Intimate connection between Yahweh and The Messiah
Zech. 11:13 Zech. 13:7 (Ps. 110:1
Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter.
“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.
“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Mourning for an only child
God’s unique son, John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Weep over a firstborn
Jesus’ Mother
This is a great example of foreshadowing in the OT
to the ancient Jews, this was not clear
Later, it seemed to be
The Babylonian Talmud says: “One holds that it was for the Messiah the son of Joseph who was killed, as written in Zechariah 12: When they look on me, whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child.” [Tractate Sukkah, Chapter 5]
One For Israel, “As we know, the term “Messiah the son of Joseph” comes from Joseph's character in the Torah. Joseph was rejected by his own people, exiled to the Gentiles, believed to be dead and forgotten entirely. Meanwhile, among the Gentiles, Joseph was welcomed and became a great and important leader. He performed miracles and wonders in their midst and eventually, Joseph appeared before his brothers again. And this time – they didn't reject him, but accepted him and mourned for him with bitter tears.
Like Joseph, Yeshua the Messiah was rejected by our people, exiled to Gentiles, believed to be dead… forgotten entirely. Meanwhile among the Gentiles, Yeshua was welcomed and became a great and important leader. He continued to perform miracles and wonders in their midst and, as we have seen – one day, like Joseph, Yeshua too will once again be welcomed by His people, who will mourn deeply for Him.”
for us, this is very clear, because we’ve been through the story
we know what happens to Jesus The Messiah
Vs 11, A Great Day of Mourning
Vs 11, A Great Day of Mourning
The Plain of Meggido
Alludes back to the mourning done for King Josiah, 2 Chron. 35:24-25
So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in his second chariot and brought him to Jerusalem. And he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. Jeremiah also uttered a lament for Josiah; and all the singing men and singing women have spoken of Josiah in their laments to this day. They made these a rule in Israel; behold, they are written in the Laments.
Vs 12-14, Everyone Mourns For Him
Vs 12-14, Everyone Mourns For Him
The Mourning touches and effects everyone
The House of David
The House of Nathan
could be Nathan the prophet or Nathan, Davids son
The House of Levi
The House of the Shimeites (Levis grandson)
What do all of these mean?
its either; Royalty, Prophet, Priest
its either; Royalty, Prophet, Priest
or its Royalty and priests/political and religious leaders (Their son and grandsons)
or its Royalty and priests/political and religious leaders (Their son and grandsons)
This would make sense since it was they that had a hand in piercing the Messiah, Vs 10.
Vs 13:1, Fountain of Cleansing
Vs 13:1, Fountain of Cleansing
Fountain
“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.
Notice this fountain is provided AFTER the death of Messiah
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
Theres a fountain free
