They were dark days indeed. A cloud of fear hung over the room. Jesus had been publicly lynched and their was nothing hes followers could have done to stop it. Now the reallity of the possibly of their own impending deaths has paralized them . . . crippled them with panic. They find themselves, all but one, locked in a room waiting out the storm, hoping to keep their lives.
In these uncertain and fearful moments and all to familiar friend shows up.
Developmental question:
have you ever had doubts? I know you have because in my experience as a pastor and chaplain many people over the years have come to me and expressed concern that they had very real doubts. and in my experience I have notice that even though people have doubts they often don’t like that they do have them and feel uneasy about their doubts.
Thomas Wright the great Scholar and Bishop of the Church of England says, “In the Christian faith there is not anything inhearently sinful about doubts. That is it is not considered a great moral failing.
indeed we see not just in John gospel but in other gospels that the 12 disciples and other early followers of Jesus also suffered from doubts.
Jesus does not condemn Thomas for his doubts but rather invites him to explore the fact and find peace and belief.
