Overcoming Mindsets
Last week we talked about 2 Cor 10 and discussed what strongholds are, but I want to get deeper into this verse. I get asked how do I evangelize to people who believe they are saved, but have wrong beliefs. They say the believe in God, but they are drunk, they believe they just have to say a prayer and they will get into Heaven.
A stronghold is a belief system that is held on to tightly and typically ingrained into the fabric of who someone is. When you try to remove a stronghold out of someone’s life the result is the same as trying to change an aspect of someone’s character. For me, part of my existence is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a stronghold in my life. Trying to change my theology and beliefs of the Holy Spirit would be like trying to change my gender. IT’s built into who I am.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
The word argument is logismos.
Logismos- One’s calculative reasoning. Conscience.
That’s why the bible connects our logic to lofty opinions.
Hupsoma- any elevated place or thing.
This is where we get our defintion of pride.
Think about your average country boy and their American Pride. Not only is part of who they are it’s an elevated practice. So how to we pray?
The veil is removed from their eyes
16 But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.
In Jewish terms the veil is a point of seperation. People couldn’t go past the veil or else they would die. When we pray for the veil to be removed we are praying the thing that is causing this seperation be removed.
2. The Holy Spirit to hover over them and protect them.
2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
The Picture I get is the Holy Spirit keeping the chaos in order and protecting things until God gave further instructions to contain the chaos and make it useful. An unsaved persons life is very chaotic. The next statement in Genesis was God creating light. When we pray for The Holy Spirit to contain the chaos and protect the person it buys us time for the rest of the prayers to take affect.
3. For Divine appointments
Psalm 37:23 (ESV)
23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord…
We can pray that God establishes people’s steps to speak the person. We talked 2 weeks ago about how strategic God is. He knows how to make the pieces fall into place.
4. Remove high places and pride
The hupsoma- High and loft places.
5. Remove strongholds
Logismos- calculated reasoning. OR the glasses we see everything through.
6. Bind Satan
18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
You can bind Satan. You can form a hedge of protection around your loved ones.
