Call to Worship - Psalm 150
1 Praise Yah! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse. 2 Praise Him for His mighty deeds; Praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. 3 Praise Him with trumpet blast; Praise Him with harp and lyre. 4 Praise Him with tambourine and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. 5 Praise Him with resounding cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise Yah. Praise Yah!
Scripture Reading - Romans 1:1-7
1 Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, having been set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,
3 concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 who was designated as the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
5 through whom we received grace and apostleship for the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Introduction:
What is the trinity?
Paul is introducing himself to the believers in Rome but his focus is the glory of the Trinity. One true and living God eternally existing as three distinct and perfectly equal persons in perfectly divine unity and purpose. Equal in essence, distinct in person, distinct in their roles. One is essence and one in mind, will, and power. And this is only possible with God since He alone is the divine being. And while each member of the trinity are of the same essence and therefore One, there is a real, eternal difference between Father, Son, and Spirit that pertains not to the divine attributes but to the way the three exist in relation to one another. And this is why we worship the God who is three in one.
What is the Gospel?
What is the Good News?
If there is Good News we must logically conclude that there is Bad News
Paul shows us that the Good News is greater than the Bad News because it:
Was determined in eternity past through the sovereign grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Was accomplished at the cross through the sacrificial grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Is being accomplished today through the regenerating and transforming grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Therefore in Romans 1:1-7 we see:
(1) A promised Gospel (1:1-2)
2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,
Was determined in eternity past through the sovereign grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
The trinity FS&HS determined in eternity past
The Holy Spirit revealed to the prophets this plan
Beginning in Gen 3:15 there is the promise of salvation, the promised of Jesus, Yeshua, Yahweh saves, salvation is of the Lord
The promise of a living redeemer who would stand upon the earth in the last days
(2) A trinitarian Gospel (1:3-4)
Was accomplished at the cross through the sacrificial grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
3 concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 who was designated as the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Concerning - the substance of the gospel is Jesus
The incarnation was the predetermined plan of the Trinity
the enfleshment and humiliation of Jesus - born of the seed of David
according to the flesh - he was human, a man of flesh and blood
designated (declared) as the Son of God in power by his resurrection through the Holy Spirit
(3) A saving and transforming Gospel (1:5-7)
Is being accomplished today through the regenerating and transforming grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
5 through whom we received grace and apostleship for the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
we received grace and apostleship
obedience of faith
among all the Gentiles
you are the called of Jesus Christ
to all who are beloved of God (God’s beloved)
called as saints
Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (through the Holy Spirit)
What is the gospel? The Gospel is the life, ministry and effects of the work of Jesus.
We live in a gospel-less church culture
We invite people to church, we invite people because of the music, because of the children’s program, youth program, singles group, seniors group. You’ll love the building, you’ll love the pastor, you’ll love the coffee.
But salvation is not in the church, the people, the music, the coffee.
Salvation is in Jesus. The Gospel is Jesus.
Benediction
Now the God who has loved you with an everlasting love and has brought you into the bonds of an everlasting covenant, support you all the days with everlasting arms until the day when He places everlasting joy upon your heads. Amen.
