An Inspiring Friendship: David and Jonathan
An Inspiring Friendship: David and Jonathan
1) Ice Breaker led by Paul + DISTRIBUTE JOURNALS/pencils/pens
2) Share brief vision: The Drama of David
We will be journeying through 3 key episodes in the life of Israel’s greatest king
a king who beautifully points us to Jesus through his faithful love
and a king who tragically points us to our NEED for Jesus, through the sin and drama of his life
This morning and Monday morning will be a Prologue and Epilogue, an introduction to this great king, and a conclusion that wraps everything together from the New Testament
3) For this session and our Monday session, we will be doing a Bible Study more a formal teaching, so the fruitfulness of our time largely depends on your engagement and participation!
START:
Our aim this morning is to consider the INSPIRING friendship b/w David and Jonathan.
Let’s begin by reading a few of the passages that describe their relationship. (LOTS of Scripture, so I’m going to need everyone to participate in reading loud and clear. If you don’t feel comfortable reading, you can say pass.)
We’ll start here (go to the right, assign 18, 19, then 20 cont. to the right), each person can read roughly 5 verses.
As we read through this together, 3 things I want you to take note of that I’ll ask about (in your journal or in your mind). I want to hear at least 1 thing from each person: 1) Things that stand out about David and Jon’s friendship? 2) Q’s that arise. 3) Repetitions. What words\phrases repeat?
1 Sam 18:1-5
1 Sam 19:1-6
1 Sam 20
Read Scriptures.
Initial observations. What stood out to you?
What questions arise/anything unclear?
Repetitions? hilite deep love and God-centeredness
What is steadfast love? Watch Bible Project: faithful love. How is Jesus the best example of khesed?
How can you show hesed to Jesus? to others?
Closing Prayer Time
2-3 minutes: Personally commit this weekend to the Lord, thanking Him for His hesed and asking him to ‘wondrously show his steadfast love’ afresh to you.
3-4 minutes: Picture 1 person with whom you have/would like to have a non-romantic hesed-friendship. If they don’t exist, imagine what it would look like. Take a couple minutes to thank the Lord for such friends/ ask the Lord to give you such a friend (or a few!).
Turn to 1-2 others and share 1 hope/desire you have for this weekend ahead. Pray for each other!
Tim close in short prayer based in John 15
