If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Pg. 95
How would that power help you in life?
Context
The Old Testament Prophets had promised a day when the Spirit of God would dwell in God’s people
Isaiah 44:3–5 “3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. 4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams. 5 This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s,’ another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.””
Ezekiel 36:24–28 “24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.”
Joel 2:28–32 “28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.”
In just these three passages, we see that the Holy Spirit was promised!! and was delivered!
Jesus promised that the Spirit was coming too, and that it was a big deal
Luke 4:1 “1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness”
Then we saw it’s grand entrance last week.
Acts 2:1–4 “1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

The Holy Spirit Convicts the World

What would it have been like to have been one of the disciples?
It would have been amazing! Ya’ll ever heard the question, if you could talk to one person from history, who would it be? Many people would say Jesus, but i’m not sure that Jesus would say Jesus. Look at John 16:7-11
John 16:7–11 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Let’s look at Vs. 7 first
This is where the Holy Spirit is given a more descriptive name. What is this name? (CSB Counselor, ESV Helper)

Let’s look at vs. 8-11
The Holy Spirit serves as a helper for Believers, but what does He do in the world based off of what you read in 8-11 and your own understanding?
He convicts them of their Sin and shows them the Path towards Salvation. He also shows them the consequences of Sin and Judgement
John 3:5 ESV
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
What does John mean here?

someone Loving someone like Jesus, even though they don’t deserve it?

The Holy Spirit Guides toward Truth

Read John 16:12-14
John 16:12–14 ESV
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
The Holy Spirit is given to guide us towards Jesus’ purposes and teaching

Obedience

listening to His voice, and looking for opportunities
1 Corinthians 2:14 “14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”
White Board Example Pg. 99
Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot comprehend the things of God.
What aspects of the Spirit are you thankful for?

The Holy Spirit Leads God’s people

Romans 8:12–13 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
What is the struggle between flesh and Spirit in this passage?
conflict between two opposing forces within a believer
Talk Imputed Vs. Imbued Grace
How can we put sins to death?
confessing and repenting
avoiding situations
accountability
Romans 8:14–17 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
How does the Knowledge that we are heirs with Christ through Adoption by the Holy Spirit give us hope for the future?
Always a part of God’s family
feel safe because of who our Father is
Can have understanding
