Gods will in the garden
Gods will in the garden
Q. What is Gods will for your life>>
Recap---
the last supper at the passover- holliday
jesus institutes communion
remember me ..
they finish the meal
and we are picking up in verse 39-42
Jesus spent most of His nights at the mount of olives just outside of Jerusalem.
Here he often prayed in the evening..
He didnt run to His x box
or watch the western confrence finals..
He went to pray and talk to God.
Let us be reminded to carve out some time every night to pray to God.
.. Even though Jesus knew Judas , who was going to betray Him, would know where to find Him,,
He still went there…
It is most likely because Jesus Himself gave His life up by plan..
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
Never the less in His humanity
the struggle of the cross was still burdensome to Him..
His disciples followed Him to the spot of prayer
and He told them to pray that you may not enter into temptation.
This is that they would not fall into the power of evil that was surely to attack every person who boldly proclaims Christ as their king...
Some temptations that they will be faced with will come soon.
They will be tempted to run and hide after the Jesus is crucified.
They will be tempted to leave the faith.
because of hardship…
This is a prayer that we must pray as well.
The enemy would like nothing better than for you to hide your faith from others and to run away from Him...
Story… we met a women who lost her daughter during pregnancy,
She had told us that she stopped going to church for a long time and lost faith in God...
This is an example of a temptation that we may face.
Q// What are some temptations that you may face or have faced that will hurt your relationship with God?
Jesus went a bit further from His disciples
a stones throw
and He knelt down to pray..
Jesus prays Father if it is your will take this cup away from me , neverthe less not my will but yours be done..
Here we see that Jesus is praying for God to take away the cup of suffering
but even more so He prays for Gods will
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Here we need to make a distinction between What Gods will means
His will is His intention, His plan..
We see His will defined in two ways..
His will of decree
this is His order of events to happen.
In the cross, God decreed His will that Jesus would go to the cross .
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Gods general will of desire is
that all of Israel would repent and believe the Gospel.
example : Gods desire is that you would not sin ever.
His decree is that your sin would play a role in drawing you to him for forgivness..
another example to help break it down
Your parents decree may be that your going on vacation to georgia.
but their will of desire is to go on vacation to the bahamas.
but because money is tight for everyone
they plan on doing georgia this year and the bahamas when they retire..
We see Gods desire would not be pain and death for His righteous son.
yet His desire for salvation produced His decree to put His son on the cross.
Jesus needed to die for the sins of the world.
It would have been easy for Jesus to escape
but He wanted to do the will of His father.
Gods will was that Jesus would drink the cup of His wrath on our behalf.
the wrath of God is His judgment against sin.
We see Jesus take time in prayer to prepare Himself.
To do Gods will
Pray for strength to do Gods will
Pray for strength to do Gods will
Jesus says not my will but yours be done.
This should lead us to first and foremost seek after Gods will and not ours.
We can not command God to do anything for us.
We can not pretend that if we have enough faith Gd will do what we want him to.
We need to pray and ask Him what His will is.
Q. Do you ever ask yourself, WHat is Gods will for my life?
I have wondered that many times…
It is not as hard as it seems.
The best way to find Gods will for your life is by matching it up to the word of God...
lets look at some simple examples..
is God cool with you cussing?
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Does God want you to be a pilot when you grow up?
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
Q.What do we get from this...
You need to work hard at whatever you do.
So is it Gods will for you to be a pilot?
Start praying about it..
and know
His revealed will is that you have a job and that you work hard at it…
from there you need to rely on personal relationship and prayer.
story- I needed to find a church.
I wanted to go deeper, and I wanted to find a church home that would be a family…
so we prayed.
specifically one morning I prayed.. Lord you need to tell me without a shadow of a doubt where you want me to go..
I need to know your will..
so I was reading 1 cor 15 and singing blessed assurence in the morning.
I end up going to church and the message is in 1 cor 15
as I am praying and feeling the Lords call
I told Him I need confermation this is where you want me to be..
the closing song starts and its blessed assurence..
We were welcomed with hugs and friends from day one..
and believe it or not the pastor was out front and was the first person we met.
I took my relationship and experience and I matched it up with Gods word
Jesus knew from the old testemant scriptures it was Gods will for Him to suffer the cross.
He prayed and It was confirmed through relationship.
and know He needs strength to carry that out.
read 43-44
An Angel appears to Jesus to strengthen Him.
And He needed it.
He was so stressed about going to the cross that he began to sweat blood.
This is an actua thing and can happen and has happened to people.
He was facing the trial of bearing the burden of Gods wrath against the world.
prayer will strengthen you to go through the hardest things in your life
prayer will strengthen you to go through the hardest things in your life
You will face major trials.
death in the family,
marriage problems,
church problems,
break ups,
and only God knows what else…
When these things happen
you need to pray even more ernastly.
God doesent keep your problems from happening.
He doesnt want you to pray away your problems
He wants you to pray for strength to get through them..
He promises to walk with you through them...
like footstep poem.
read 45-46
Here we see the disciples not quite understanding that in just a short time
Jesus was going to be arrested and sent to the cross.
and their life would change forever..
When you start following Christ, your life will change forever.
They were going to have a target on their back, just like you.
The world would hate them and persecute them and they would eventually die for their faith..
this is why he said pray lest you enter into temptation...
so Jesus encouraged them to pray.
and this is my encouragment to you
commit to praying for Gods will
commit to praying for Gods will
lets commit to praying for Gods will…
even if we dont like the answers we get.
for sometimes to serve the Lord,
it is His will that we will face trials.
It may be uncomfortable,
there may be temptations that we need to turn from,
following Jesus is not for the faint of heart....
So if you are going to follow him, you need to pray
pray to understand Gods will
and the power to carry it out.
As we see this perfect example in Jesus
when He prayed and sweat blood in the garden of gesethename
maybe you have never prayed and gave your life to Jesus.
It is His will that you would repent from your sin and believe in Him for the forgivness of your sin.
and the salvation of your soul..
if thats you we will give you an opportunity to do that in a minute
