People have their “favorites” of just about everything. We have our “best or favorite friend or friends.” We have our favorite place to eat out, or our favorite game to play. We tend to categorize people, places, and things into those that are our favorites and those that are not. This reality got me thinking about our relationship God and three question arose from that thought.
First, “are God’s people our favorite people?”
When we think about the people we enjoy spending the most time with are they “God’s people?” In other words, are they those that have obeyed God’s gospel plan of Salvation or are they those that have not? Maybe you are too young to have obeyed the gospel yet as are your friends and in this case I would ask are your favorite friends those at church services or are they those that are not going to church services? If your favorite people to hang out with are not “God’s people” we need to ask why that is the case? Shouldn’t God’s people be our favorite people? It’s God’s people that we should love so much that we are willing to die for them.
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
Second question, “are God’s places your favorite places?”
Would we rather be at a party, sporting event, cattle show, or the like rather than be attending God’s house for worship and bible class? The truth is the majority of people would much rather be somewhere other than bible class and worship. We know this because they choose to be at worldly places over God’s house. Are God’s places your favorite places?
1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
Third question, “are God’s things your favorite things?”
When you consider what things you like are they things that will help you stay pure, holy, and godly or are they things that will make you ashamed after enjoying them? There are certainly many ways we can entertain ourselves but we must always ask ourselves “are God’s things our favorite things?” Let me illustrate this. Are playing video games, sports, or things like far more enjoyable to you than learning about God through his word, praying to God, or telling others about God? I’m not saying we cannot enjoy playing videos games, sports, and things like this but are they our favorite or are God’s things our favorite.
47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments, Which I love. 48 My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on Your statutes.
127 Therefore I love Your commandments More than gold, yes, than fine gold!
