Genesis 22

Genesis 22:1–2 ESV
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Isaac was Abraham’s only son. The Son whom He Loved.
Only Son. “lonely” son. Meaning there was no one else like Him.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Mimicks this language of God’s Only Son. His Unique Son. One of a Kind. He was of the same nature as the Father. He was divine in the same way His Father was divine.
“That He gave His Only Son”
Driven and Motivated by Love. Maybe we heard this truth so much that we forgot how significant it is.. that God “Gave” you His Son. Um… Woah. WHY did we deserve this? All motivated out of Love. Driven by Love. Sometimes you will hear people say, God did all this just to glorify himself. that is not the whole story… He does not need the glory and praise of men, but He was driven out of Love for fallen men. To reconcile man to God.

Genesis 22:2–10 ESV
He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

The Willingness of The Son

The Bible does not give us an age for Isaac. But many scholars say that he is no infant, but a grown man. Now Abraham is an old man, the odds of him overpowering Isaac are slim. But somehow someway Isaac was bound to the log. Maybe Isaac was put into some divine slumber or he actually went along with this in a desire to please God and maybe sharing Abraham’s radical faith that He Would be raised from the dead. But Jesus willingly gave
John 10:18 ESV
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

What is the Gospel?

Come Again to You

But that’s not the Whole Story. Abraham somehow believed that Isaac would be raised from the dead. He wouldn’t stay dead for long. But He trusted that God would raise Him Up. This is said in
Genesis 22:5 ESV
Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Hebrews 11:19 (ESV)
[Abraham] considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
Genesis 22:11–12 ESV
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
God stopped Abraham from going through and killing Isaac. And provided a sacrifice in His place. Substituting Isaac. But Jesus, in our place, died for the sins of mankind. His fully Human body being completely given over and failing as He took “death” and “punishment” in our place.
This was a massive trust fall for Abraham. Can He Trusts God even in death. That God is stronger than death. And can overcome death. He has seen it when he animated the dead womb of Sarah. Where did he get that idea? Where did that Faith come from. But it is a shadow of things to come. When Jesus broke death.

“He is not here, He is risen. Come and see where He lay.”

This becomes the critical point of the christian tradition. The disciples lives are radically transformed because of it. Paul a murderer becomes a champion of the Faith. 3,000 people on the day of pentecost believe in the resurrected Christ. Lives are transformed
1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
If Christ died and did not rise again you are still in your sins.
What does your Baptism Mean?
Think of Baptism… When you go down in the water. That is symbol of death. For us we are dying to our selves. And uniting ourselves with Christ’s death. Imagine, if you just stayed in the water.
If Christ just died. There is no newness of life. You are still going to die in Sin!
But because Christ Rose from the dead. We too will rise from the Water. We are no longer dead, but we are alive in Christ and we have the power of resurrection in us.
Romans 6:5–6 ESV
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
But when you rise up. There is a coming glory when the mortal puts on the immortal.
1 Corinthians 15:53–55 ESV
For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
Billy Graham Quote.
Romans 6
What does this mean. Our faith and our Hope is in a resurrected God. Who is reconciling everything back to Him. He is making all things new. Everything better. We get to live in the reality of that resurrection power now Philippians 3:10 we put to death all the dead works. all the sinful works.
Philippians 3:10–11 ESV
that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Romans 6:11–14(ESV)
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
You have been driven by pride and comparison your whole life. You compare yourself to others and only feel good when you are better than others. Don’t you know that you are dead to sin??
You can not stop your mind from having sexual thoughts. Any thought you have you just let it right by.
You hate people. You can’t stand them. You can’t stand that they succeed. You’re jealous of what they have. Don’t you know that you are dead to sin??
You cannot forgive. The root of unforgiveness is pride. Do you not know you are dead to sin?

Walk in Newness of life

Since Abraham knew Isaac would rise from the dead, how do you think this affected what he was going to do? Did this make sacrificing Isaac any easier?
What insight does this give us about The Father sacrificing His Son?
What does it say about The Father that he “gave” His Son? What does it say about The Son?
How should knowing that We will one day have a resurrected body affect our day to day lives?
What does our baptism truly signify?

What is the Gospel?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:2. What is the truth we must hold fast to?
Why would someone say that
