John 14:1 ESV
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:2 ESV
2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
John 14:3 ESV
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
John 14:4 ESV
4 And you know the way to where I am going.”
John 14:5 ESV
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:7 ESV
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
John 14:8 ESV
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
John 14:10 ESV
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
John 14:11 ESV
11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
John 14:12 ESV
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:13 ESV
13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 ESV
14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

BEEN- to have the quality of being

SO- the considerable quantity of something that goes way beyond normal expectations.
Jesus never downsizes.
LONG - a period of time marked by specific attributes or activities.
John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Jesus was pleased by Philip’s request. No doubt.
But he also seems to be sad by how obtuse Philip was. Jesus was astonished that Philip had missed the most obvious part of Jesus existence on earth.... his oneness with the father. You need only look at the next verse, verse 10 to get it. John 14.10
John 14:10 ESV
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

Jesus time and again described his relationship with the Father, and who the Father is, by His self. Who He was.
Why did Jesus do the miracles and heal, etc.,?
Look at John 10.38
John 10:38 ESV
38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
How did Jesus pray for us?
Look at John 17.21
John 17:21 ESV
21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

In the very beginning of John’s gospel, Jesus said this in John 1.18
John 1:18 ESV
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

No image or likeness can adequately depict who God is.
Who God is can only be represented by a person, not an impersonal object. and that person is Jesus.

if a personality must be employed to represent God, that personality cannot be less than God and do him justice, nor can it be so far above humanity that it cannot communicate God perfectly to men. For this reason John says that “the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known” (John 1:18). The way Jesus made known the character and reality of the Father was by his words and works. The truth of God filled Jesus’ words; the power of God produced his works.

How did Paul see Jesus:
Colossians 1:15 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

How did the writer of Hebrews see Jesus” Hebrews 1.3
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

John 14:9 NASB95
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

What If The Only Knowledge Of Who Jesus Is Is Who You Are?

How do you act?
How do you love?
How do you forgive?
How are you relationships?

Let’s put the key verse back on the screen this morning.... John 14.9
John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Conversation with Easton in the car.... chik fil a, peanut butter sandwiches.... he argued with me.
You need protein.
Some Fat’s good for you.
The government wouldn’t let you eat the wrong stuff.
What are the arguments that Satan gave Adam and Eve in the garden to eat the fruit?
What are the arguments Satan gives to us to keep us from being like Jesus? Hold that thought for a moment.
So What Is Jesus asking Philip in this passage?

How Long Is Long Enough?

Jesus is preparing to leave His Disciples.
He’s spent three years with them.

The Way You Live Reveals The God You Serve.

No Excuses.
Your Every Relationship should have no question about what Jesus looks like.
Your every relationship should not question where your eternal destiny is after you die.
Does your husband/wife/child/parent/brother/sister/brother in law/sister in law/ aunt/uncle/niece/nephew/
friend/enemy/neighbor/coworker/everyone in your spere of influence know that you know Jesus?
And if your answer is no- why not?
If you cannot love someone they know who your God really is.
If you cannot forgive someone they know who your God really is.
If youre holding a grudge this morning- and God and you know you are- they know who your God really is.
If you’re controlled by a habit this morning, that is your God.
You know who your god is… but those around you know it more clearly than you do at times. T/hey know it by how you cannot forgive, how you ignore their presnece, they know it by how much you DON’t look like Jesus.
How Long is long enough?
