Romans 5:12-21

This morning we continue back with Romans
If you will recall a few weeks ago we worked our way through Romans 5.
We learned that there are some benefits to being saved by grace through Faith in Jesus
Not that we cheapen what Jesus did by calling them benefits but there are results to being saved that sometimes we overlook
That because of our faith in Christ we are now justified with God
That because Christ stepped in at the right time and died for the unrighteous and by the way that is you and me
While we were still enemies of God Jesus stepped in and died for us to give us the opportunity of salvation through Faith in Christ not through following the law
We ended with
11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
We are to exalt in Jesus since it is only through Him that we are reconciled with God
Understand that Church
There is no one else by which you are saved other than Jesus
There is nothing else that can reconcile you to God
To make you right with God but Jesus and Jesus alone and that is worthy of our exaltation and our worship
When you sit down and think about your salvation and maybe you do that often or maybe you don't but this morning I would ask you to spend sometime maybe right now or during the invitation to think about your salvation
To think that you being saved is only because of Christ
it has nothing to do what you have done or bring to the table
You simply receive the gift
It is so praise worthy and exalting worthy as to what Jesus has done
What a great reminder for us this morning
Paul then goes on to explain salvation on the world scale if you will
If the previous verses were focused on the individual Paul is going to show how we got to the point
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Paul explains how we got to the point of needing a savior
That sin entered the world through Adam one man
And we know the wages of sin are death
When sin came into the world so did the consequences of sin death
But sin wasn’t spread to everyone the consequences of sin were spread to everyone because we know that everyone sins
I know it gets really confusing but Paul is sharing with the Jews in Rome how they got here
As good Jews they would have been able to follow their lineage back that far
They would have seen yes through Adam sin entered the world
And the consequences of sin is death and it came to
But how could we have the sentence of death if there was nothing to call it sin like the law
Before the law there was no accounting of sin per say
If look at the people before Moses and the law they still died
Paul quickly answers that with didn’t matter death still reigned because the consequences of sin are death
It was essentially passed on through Adam
Because sin entered through Adam not that the act of sin was passed to us but the default nature to sin was passed to us and so the consequences of sin death were passed to us
Paul is setting up to show the Grace and Mercy and Kindness of God through his reconciliation of us through His son Jesus
Which makes Romans 5:11, all the more important
and all the more worthy of praise and worship
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
is the grace of God that you and I have salvation
It is the grace of God that we even had the opportunity of salvation
Grace is the unmerited favor of God
Getting something you do not deserve
And church we did not deserve salvation
We did not deserved God sending His son Jesus to die at the right time for the unrighteous people that we are
But
The grace of God
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
Paul says Adam is similar to the Jesus in that through him something came
If sin and death came through Adam then Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy, Forgiveness and life come through Jesus
If everyone experienced death and loss through Adam, you will experience more from the grace, mercy and forgiveness through Christ
Church Paul is explaining
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Jesus is the only way
Jesus is the only life
I am sure that some of you if not all of you have tried to fill the God sized hole in your heart with something else and you would all agree it fails
When the church says there is grace and mercy at the foot of the cross
It is not just a feel good line we tell people during difficult times
It is something true and right
You and I have done some horrible things in our lifetime thus far
But
The grace and mercy of God has dealt with all that
16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
This seems pretty simple
That Paul is explaining the free gift that we had just discussed
The salvation to everyone who believes did not come through Adam
Although we sure try to do our own saving
We might even try earning our own salvation
But unmerited favor or grace means you cannot earn it or buy it
It means we shouldn’t have gotten it but the Love of God for us means He extended grace to us
We know that through Adam came the sin came the transgression and because of that transgression death entered the world
And if transgression and death came through the one
That free grift that Paul talks about is only available through Christ
Which Paul plainly puts that
If Adam by his disobedience gave us sin and death because of sin
Then Jesus because of his obedience to God the Father gives us life and life abundantly
The free gift
Church I know we say it over and over it seems like
And we do because we are commanded to share the Good News of Jesus
Paul is sharing that Romans is full of the Gospel Message
This morning that free gift is Jesus
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
free defined is
without cost or payment
No longer confined or imprisoned
What Jesus did on the cross doesn’t cost you except to be obedient to Christ
Christ offers it to
This morning you no longer have to worry about your lineage
like Adam passed things on to the entire world
You can be adopted into a new family through Jesus
by that free gift
you need to accept that free gift
simply take the salvation
But you need to fully understand what you are getting in salvation
You are completely justified
Jesus pays for your own debt of sin
Church that is why Jesus came
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Jesus came to give you and I life
Jesus came that salvation from your sin would be possible
That is what Paul is talking about
If sin brings about death
Then Jesus brings about life church
don’t you want life
If you truly want life this morning Jesus is waiting
Paul continues
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
Paul starts off with showing us once again how the disobedience of one man caused all this
so before we go any further or finish this morning lets go back
16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
In Genesis 2, we see God give Adam a command to not eat from 2 certain trees
Then in Genesis 3 we see that Adam ate from one of those trees he was commanded to not eat from
In short church He was disobedient
And that simple act caused all this
It allowed sin into the world and because of sin death came as the consequence of sin
You were born with a sin nature, a default setting to sin because of Adam
Paul is showing the difference between the disobedience of Adam and the obedience of Christ
31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.
Jesus clearly came to be obedient to what God has called Him to do
It would seem odd to explain obedience but it is doing what you are told
20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Paul ends chapter 5 with this
The purpose of the law again is to show us our sin and to get knowledge of sin
Remember we have talked about this
I think we have a good understanding of the law and the purpose of the law
It revealed to you how imperfect you really are
And when you realize how much sin is in your life
Then you understand how much grace is in your life
Where there is knowledge of sin there is grace and when the knowledge of sin grows so does grace
Church we know that God wins and defeated sin once and for all
So as you have knowledge of sin grace is greater because Jesus defeated sin
grace will always triumph over sin
This morning as we move to our close
As the band comes up
This morning we asked you to think about somethings
To think about your salvation and the grace you recieved when you repented of your sins and trusted in Jesus
I would encourage you and challenge stop walking around defeated by the world but to walk and live in the grace of God
Or maybe you are here this morning and you cant think of when you are saved because you are lost
I would encourage to come to the front and speak with someone about salvation
They will show you through scripture how you can be saved
How the grace of God can enter your life and you can be adopted into the family of God this morning al because of the Grace of God
Or maybe you simply need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
