“Don’t Be Greedy”
welcome
recap everything from chapter 12 to build up context for today
read passage
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
either story of Bubba here or story of me and watermelon
relate it to message
continue to talk about where we are at with Jesus and his journey
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Jesus makes it clear his focus is not on inheritance issues but salvation issues
the old testament law found in Numbers and Deuteronomy outlined how to handle these situations, however, there were still times when a moment would arise that would need intervention in order to make a decision…
Jesus speaks to the issues of our heart and does so in times of prayer…
preach on this…
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
here is an interesting nugget or fact for yall here in this story when translated back to greek has the word “ME” in it 4 times and “I” in it 8 times
Jesus proceeded to illustrate his point that life consists of more than wealth and possessions.
This story includes a man, already rich, who had a productive year on his farm.
So huge was this bumper crop that his barns were full to overflowing.
Wise businessman that he was, the man simply tore down his barns and built bigger ones so that he could store everything.
While there was nothing wrong with the man’s rejoicing in his crop or building to make storage,
his basic flaw was in focusing completely on his wealth and on his own enjoyment.
preach on nothing wrong preparing for the future and working to provide but be careful not to make it priority…
conclude here
And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
you see jesus is addressing a heat issue here…
preach, Holy spirit help me…
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
continue to preach this and the connect here between luke and matthew…
holy spirit take over…
