INTRODUCTION: What’s the most important questions you have ever been asked: I do? Will you accept this job.
For some of us that hardest question we have to answer is “Where do you want to eat?” In OK there is a restaurant named “I don’t care”.
TENSION: The struggle that keeps me up at night is that many of us think we are saved and aren’t. Please just assume you aren’t sure.
Most important questions of your life:
Most important questions of your life:
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
so loved - so dead, or so good. You are so loved.
In reality though it means He loved in this way.
only Son - What do you love enough to let you child be brutally murdered over?
whoever - all. You want to have eternal life, believe. Rich, poor, black white, criminal drug dealer. Just believe.
Believe - Believe what? That he is Lord and raised up from the dead.
perish - more than death
eternal life - spiritual life. Same life that Jesus brought down in Chapter 1.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Jesus did not come to condemn you - He came to save you. Some of us really need to hear that. Because we view God like an angry Father who wants to punish us.
Might be - Doesn’t mean that everyone will. God only saves those who believe in him
Saved - It can mean save from danger, it can also mean healed from a deadly disease.
Who ever believes - if you believe you are not condemned. It goes on to say later there is no condemnation for those that are in Christ. Why? Because Christ took the condemnation for you. There is nothing left. He took it all.
ILLUSTRATION: SPEEDING.
Condemned already - You are not in a neutral state, but rather you are in condemned state. A hopeless state.
But why did he not come for that? Because you are already condemned. It’s like if you got sentenced to life in prison, you are in jail and then you get a visit from a police officer that says I am not here to condemn you. But you already have!
How do I get saved? Believe in Jesus
How do I get saved? Believe in Jesus
How do I know if I am saved?
How do I know if I am saved?
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
judgment - condemned
light - from chapter 1.
loved - agape.
darkness, lack of light.
20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Telling people: you didn’t hear it from me.
The bible is clear. You are hiding your in your sin and your not saved.
Look at your actions
Look at your actions
21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
What does this mean for me? Bring your actions to light.
What does this mean for me? Bring your actions to light.
Nicodemus - Rich young ruler
CONCLUSION:
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
For God so loved the world -
For - connecting it back to Jesus.
God so loved the world - God agape the kosmos. He unconditionally loved the whole world.
that he gave his only son -
Because he loves the world he gave .
TRUE LOVE ALWAYS GIVES. (POINT SOME HOW)
only son - The gift he gave was that of his only son. (can’t image). No mention of death yet.
That whoever - whoever believes
should not perish - More than death, it is to be destroyed.
eternal life - life is life from chapter 1 spiritual life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world - God does not want to condemn you. He wants you to be saved. (Just like that I do not want to punish my kids)
Oftentimes people think God is this angry man in the sky ready to destroy us. That isn’t true.
might be saved - not that the world would be saved, but could be saved subjunctive.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Whoever believes in him is not condemned -
condemned already - we start out in a position of being condemned. Why? Because of our sin.
