2 Sa 12:1–15 (NASB 2020)
1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said, “There were two men in a city, the one wealthy and the other poor. 2 “The wealthy man had a great many flocks and herds. 3 “But the poor man had nothing at all except one little ewe lamb Which he bought and nurtured; And it grew up together with him and his children. It would eat scraps from him and drink from his cup and lie in his lap, And was like a daughter to him. 4 “Now a visitor came to the wealthy man, And he could not bring himself to take any animal from his own flock or his own herd, To prepare for the traveler who had come to him; So he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this certainly deserves to die! 6 So he must make restitution for the lamb four times over, since he did this thing and had no compassion.” 7 Nathan then said to David, “You yourself are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘It is I who anointed you as king over Israel, and it is I who rescued you from the hand of Saul. 8 I also gave you your master’s house and put your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these! 9 ‘Why have you despised the word of the Lord, by doing evil in His sight? You have struck and killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, you have taken his wife as your wife, and you have slaughtered him with the sword of the sons of Ammon. 10 Now then, the sword shall never leave your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 This is what the Lord says: ‘Behold, I am going to raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. 12 Indeed, you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and in open daylight.’ ” 13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has allowed your sin to pass; you shall not die. 14 However, since by this deed you have shown utter disrespect for the Lord, the child himself who is born to you shall certainly die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house. Later the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.
BACKGROUND CONTENT: 2 Samuel 11 David was supposed to be in battle with the Army of Israel but he tarried in Jerusalem as the text said and being at the wrong place at the wrong time he got into some trouble. And just for a point of reminder, everyone of us when we are out of place we mess up.
David’s sins:
Yielded to temptation vs 2-3 (While involving other people)
Adultery vs 4
Exposure vs 5
Cover-up of sin which led to murder vs 6-17
Then God responded 2 Sam 11:27
2 Samuel 11:27 NASB 2020
27 When the time of mourning was over, David sent servants and had her brought to his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord.
Outline

Commissioned By God vs. 1

Make sure you are in sync with God for Him to direct you
Come representing a Godly intent and not a gossiping intent 1 Peter 3:10
1 Peter 3:10 NASB 2020
10 For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
It produces conflicts and additional discord
Go with the intent to convict of sin and not stir worldly behaviors

Conversation In The Character Of Christ vs 2-4

Must haves
Loving ApproachFilled with God’s Grace/Mercy
Clear Message Not to be misunderstood (Your Why)
Concise Point Brevity
Spirit Led & Biblical Based Done under God’s authority and Person of the Holy Spirit

Clarity Of Judgement vs 5-6

Offended at others sins based on the presentation of Nathan/others
Reflected all the emotions and intellectual responses needed for a judgement to be determined
Response to the sin mandates justice
Response was inline with God’s judgement (Proven in verse 13b)
Romans 6:23 (NASB 2020)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Cutting Conviction (Pricked Heart) vs 7-12

He was reminded of all the things and moments God demonstrated his grace (As we have been reminded of his grace when we deserve justice)
God asked for a reason “WHY” He chose to disrespect/despise God’s word by fulfilling the multiple sins committed.
2 Samuel 12:9 (NASB 2020)
9 ‘Why have you despised the word of the Lord, by doing evil in His sight? You have struck and killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, you have taken his wife as your wife, and you have slaughtered him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
God left a clear message just because we are in a relationship with HIM does not exempt us from consequences. vs 10-12

Confession Of An Offender (We all are the offenders of God’s Law) vs 13a

Acknowledgement of sin and not avoiding them helps start the repentance process
Accept there are consequences to sin; however, God determines the level of grace and mercy given
Address the behaviors deemed appropriate per the offense
God issued a public punishment because of David’s closeted affair.
God’s creative judgement was such that his plea for peace and restoration of relationship was traumatic. *We don’t have peace when we are in active sin. (Many things begin to happen) Ref. vs 15-23 death of child; The uprising within the family Chapter 15-17 from his son Absolom seeking vengeance against David’s non-response to Tamar’s rape.
We are not exempt. God can touch our lives in ways that can’t be ignored.

Consequence Revealed vs 13b-14

God spared his life
*WE Are NOT guaranteed that in our sin or rebellion God would spare our lives ref. Romans 2:5-8
Romans 2:5–8 NASB 2020
5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will repay each person according to his deeds: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He will give eternal life; 8 but to those who are self-serving and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, He will give wrath and indignation.
God took the child’s life because of David’s sins (This runs deeper than just sin)
Be careful our sins can have family implications including sickness, death, disruptions in timelines and other judgements
Deuteronomy 5:9–10 NASB 2020
9 You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, inflicting the punishment of the fathers on the children, even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but showing favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
God’s justice is guaranteed and will be fulfilled
Matthew 5:18 NASB 2020
18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished!
God takes serious his Law (Word) being disregarded and disrespect to HIM by our willful sin
Jeremiah 1:12 NASB 2020
12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”
Isaiah 55:11 NASB 2020
11 So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the purpose for which I sent it.
