The Sin offering / Guilt offering
The Sin offering / Guilt offering
This is our last major offering of the 5
So far we have seen the
Burt offering - Voluntary - It was for our sin
The perfect sacrifice and it all pointed to Jesus
Grain offering - Voluntary - all about the bread right
it signified the thanksgiving
or a memorial offering - we remember
for all that God has provided for us
Fellowship offering or the Peace offering - Voluntary
it symbolized communion or fellowship with God
because once we are made righteous through the forgiveness of our sins and expressed thankfulness
then we can enter into fellowship with him
this is now provided through Jesus
Last week we saw the Sin offering - Mandatory
this one was offered to cover our unintentional sins
and if you remember the offering was different for the
priests and the nation
versus the lay leaders and common people
category 1 and 2 had more responsibility
***Remind them of Jesus being Priest and Sacrifice
making atonement inside
coming into the presence of God
into the tent of meeting and 7 times splashed blood on the curtain
Which bring us to our last of the major offerings tonight
the guilt offering
but…. if we look we see that doesn’t start until v14
what up with that?
until now everything has fit into a nice little box
Well does anyone know who Steven Langdon is?
He is the one that put the chapters and verses in our bibles
and he sure did blow it here!
he lived in England during the 1200’s
the arch bishop of Canterbury
and this is a great example of a bad placement
as we see in Chapter 5 the sin offering continues until V13
Then the guilt offering picks up there
and from now on for a while we are going to see this overlap
however, our typology is slowing down also
do you all remember what typology is?
its a picture of Jesus
something that foreshadows Him
ok, so… Lets get to the Text
As I mentioned 1-13 covers additional reasons someone may need to participate in the sin offering
14- the end and into Chapter 6:7 cover the first half of the guilt offering
but we will get to that in a minute
Lets start with these first 13 verses or the end of the sin offering
V1 is about someone who should have testified in court, but didn’t speak up
it doesn’t seem so bad at first
but someone was depending on you
they needed your help and you weren’t there
James 4:17 “17 So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.”
he got that from Leviticus
V2-3 is about anyone who touches anything unclean
we have 2 examples
whether it is a human or animal
we will look at this later
but it’s telling us about sin
dont touch it
its like a virus
it contaminates
its contagious
dont mess with it
its like a disease
V 4 is someone who makes a rash oath or promise and does not follow through
This is a thoughtless promise
an oath
saying your going to do something and never following through
V5 says we have 2 responsibilities in this
1 is to confess
when he realized his guilt in any of these he to confess before he gives the offering
confession is very important
1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
As we have mentioned its not so much about the offering but about the heart
its about an attitude of repentance
and that is exactly what it is saying here
we should have a willingness to confess
Now we aren’t sacrificing animals anymore because of Christ
but, it is still vital to confess our sins and show remorse when we
become aware of it
and confessing it means we are less likely to repeat it
Now, this is a mandatory offering
and just like with the burnt offering
God made it possible for everyone
so as we work our way down the rest of the verses in the sin offering we see
that you were to offer a female lamb or goat in V6
or, if you couldn’t afford that V7 says 2 turtle doves or 2 pigeons
then it goes through how to offer
which is very similar to how we have already described it
then, if you cant afford birds you have the option to bring
2 quarts of fine flower
Now, because he provided a way for everyone
and that way for everyone is Jesus Christ
and no one can be without excuse
the offering has already been provided
all we must do is come to him
confess our sin
and accept His sacrifice on our behalf
exactly like what we have been discussing on Sunday mornings
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (5:11–13)
The distinctive purpose of the sin offering was to atone and provide forgiveness for specific unintentional or nondefiant sins
where (in contrast with the guilt offering) no restitution was involved.
God accepted the slaughter of the animal as a ransom payment for the particular sin which occasioned it, thus diverting His wrath from the sinner and (ultimately) to Christ on the cross.
The typology of the sin offering emphasizes the death of Christ as a satisfactory substitutionary sacrifice to provide the forgiveness of sins (2 Cor. 5:21; Eph. 1:7).
Identification with Him through personal faith leads to the practical experience of this forgiveness.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Ephesians 1:7 “7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace”
Now, lets switch gears into the guilt offering could also be called the trespass offering
we find that in V14-6:7
but we will just finish out this chapter
The guilt offering is made up of two sections
the 1st as seen starting in V14
is when we offend or sin against God
the 2nd is when we sin or offend God by offending someone else
Read V 14
Read 6:2
explain quickly the difference
This reminds us of something
10 commandments
Exodus 20.
Now, the first 4 are about God
the last 6 are about people right
so… don’t sin against God and don’t sin against people
to sum up the 10 commandments it what
to Love God and to Love People
as far as chapter 5 is concerned we will only discuss the sins
against God
those against people start in chapter 6
Now we already read V14
so if we sin unintentionally against God
in regard to what?
His holy things
if we make a half way offering
if we don’t give him our best
something like not giving a unblemished animal
failure to present to God due gifts of sacrifices,
tithes, firstfruit offerings, or things dedicated to God
failure to act out your vows to him
it is still a sin against God
Now we see something interesting now when you sin against someone else
either GOD or someone else
V16 says you are to give a restitution
add a 5th to it
20%
this is interest
so when you sin against someone else you must
give more than it cost just to make it even
if you sinned against God the priests would get the 20%
Now what this shows us is that not only are we responsible for our personal sins
but we are responsible when we sin against someone else
and when we sin against someone else it even costs more….
interest
and when there is interest there is debt
and we are all in debt to God
But what is amazing!
is the fact that Jesus paid that debt
as the suffering servant he is the ultimate ransom for us
he is the ultimate sin and guilt offering
Mark 10:45 “45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
not one more thing
notice that restitution must be done before you are forgiven
as in your debt is paid then you are atoned for
Matthew 5:23–26 “23 So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.
it is all about the heart
it is all about confession
come to Christ with all you have and lay it out there for him
