You Can Run But You Can’t Hide
Notes

Joe Louis was a champion boxer. In the run-up to the World Heavyweight Championship fight in June 1946, he said of his opponent, Billy Conn (who was well known for being fast on his feet): “He can run, but he can’t hide”. Sure enough, Joe Louis won the fight on a knock-out. President Ronald Reagan was probably echoing this when he said “You can run but you can’t hide” in October 1985. That summer, a TWA airliner had been hijacked to Beirut, hostages had been beaten and one killed, and Reagan’s intention was to send a message to terrorists everywhere, concerning the US Government’s retribution.
