Be Still and Know That I Am God
SLIDE 1 “WELCOME”
SLIDE 2 “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD”
SLIDE 3
Psalm 46:1 NASB95
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
God is the shelter for us.....from the Hebrew description here.....catch this.....everything else is falsehood
Our strength or efforts are lacking or not sufficient
very present help in trouble ....the trouble can be distress, chaos, affliction or tribulation
the good news is the very present part is the good news…the word present means to meet or to find.....the very (word) part is .....exceedingly great
What is interesting here....you would automatically think David wrote this Psalm......It says “For the Choir Director - A Psalm of the sons of Korah”
SLIDE 4 “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD”
It also says- “set to Alamoth - a song”
This whole Psalm leads up to being still and know that He is God......In fact that is at the end of this Psalm ......but there are so many great parts in here that you and I can identify with.....like for the things that start going thru our minds when we get distressed or upset
Now this is the next two verses after “God is our refuge and strength ......a very present help in trouble”
SLIDE 5
Psalm 46:2–3 NASB95
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah.
see what I mean by the response for things that start rushing through our minds in distress
and you surely cannot leave off the “Selah” on the end of verse 3
Now the Hebrew word for “Selah” is “Selah”
SLIDE 6 “SELAH”
Its a musical marker meaning pause or interruption and also included in that meaning is to lift up and exalt
SLIDE 7 “SELAH - REFLECT GOD’S COMFORT”
Now this sounds so good and true that I need to be still and know that He is God
But man being in those stressed or upset moments......my response is not always good....I say things I shouldn’t say.....I end up hurting others......or I just cannot get the worry under control
SLIDE 8 “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD”
So you know what that is .....? Emotions
Emotions are reactions of the flesh.......flesh cannot please God.......emotions of the flesh ends up turning into sin .....and if that emotion affects others then more than likely they will respond with an emotion.......flesh and many times their emotion will turn to sin also
I feel like the Lord Jesus wants to help us all with that today and ....in fact we can get a fresh new start with the Lord’s Supper......with a Selah moment we can all partake in with the Lord during Communion
SLIDE 9
TRANSFERRING EMOTIONS TO SELAH MOMENTS
Recognize the Emotion
Emotions can come in many forms.......Galatians 5:20 describes them as deeds of the flesh
Enmities....Strife…Jealousy.....Outburst of Anger.....Envying......Worry....Doubt......Guilt.....Shame.....Fear and so on
A situation comes along.......sometimes many time in a day and emotions are ready to respond
SLIDE 10 I will not read this but show it on screens
Proverbs 29:11 NLT
11 Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.
So first recognize the emotion.....pause for just a bit when the situation hits you
SLIDE 11 I will not read this but show it on screens
Proverbs 16:32 NASB95
32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.
Many times just a pause to rule our spirit will allow Holy Spirit to take over the emotion or situation and to bring His counsel over the situation
So #1 recognize the emotion.....2nd part of action we need to take
SLIDE 12
TRANSFERRING EMOTIONS TO SELAH MOMENTS
Recognize the Emotion
Give it to the Lord (pray and talk to God)
When you and I gave and surrendered our lives to Christ....His Holy Spirit seals us and resides in us
Holy Spirit is ready to counsel and console us when we talk and walk with Him
SLIDE 13
Philippians 4:6–7 NASB95
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
SLIDE 14
TRANSFERRING EMOTIONS TO SELAH MOMENTS
Recognize the Emotion
Give it to the Lord (pray and talk to God)
Walk it out with the Lord (in Spirit)
Why is number 3 so important and cannot be emphasized enough? You will return to the flesh response and just get even more frustrated
The Lord Jesus had these encounters when he was here on earth.....the problem??.....mans ways.....mans wisdom and beliefs
Look at this in John 2:24-25 and this will really help us
SLIDE 15
John 2:24–25 NASB95
24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
Walking it out with the Lord is putting Him before man’s methods and counsel
Jesus does understand and care, He was put in those same positions when He was here on earth and overcame it all.
SLIDE 16
Hebrews 4:15 NASB95
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
He is now in heaven ready to help and walk it out with us
Look what Oswald Chambers in “My Utmost for His Highest” says about this
SLIDE 17
My Utmost for His Highest (May 31st—God First)
Our Lord trusted no man; yet He was never suspicious, never bitter, never in despair about any man because He put God first in trust; He trusted absolutely in what God’s grace could do for any man. If I put my trust in human beings first, I will end in despairing of everyone; I will become bitter, because I have insisted on man being what no man ever can be—absolutely right. Never trust anything but the grace of God in yourself or in anyone else.
