Momentum Killer: Misperception
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
Narrow Gate
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. 14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.
A Tree’s Fruit
15 “Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. 16 You’ll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So you’ll recognize them by their fruit.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
True Lordship
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’ 23 Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!’
Wise and foolish Builders
24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”
Crowds Amazed
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
Narrow gate - What are some contemporary thoughts about salvation?
Coexist - All Roads lead to heaven.
It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are sincere.
going to church and being baptized is synonymous with being saved.
What does Jesus say?
Narrow is the way! Jesus is the way. it's not about being baptized or how many times you go to church, it is about a relationship with Jesus.
He goes on to point out that
You will know a tree by it's fruit!
True Lordship, true relationship
Rom 10:9,10 If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead you will be saved.
One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness and one confesses with the mouth resulting in salvation.
let's make sure we don't have misconceptions about this, what does Lord Mean?
master, authority -
not everyone who call me Lord will enter the kingdom, only the one who DOES the will of my father in heaven.
but we did this, that
notice they had works but no relationship.
"I never Knew you!"
Wise Builder:
both builders built a house, both used the same materials, same labor, same floor plan, same mortgage.
What was the difference? The sub-straight it was build upon.
we need to make sure that we have the right Sub-straight. its not the house that was built but where it was built.
faith alone by grace alone, no works
Crowds amazed because He taught with Authority!
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
