1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Because of division in the church, paul begins by discussing unity in the church… the oneness of the church....
There are 4 things that can be a bond in Christian church.
We Confess the same Lord.
All of the false idols we have ever served revealed the spiritual experience they had- they were dead. As dead as our idols of money , career, fame, and whatever. Those idols never spoke to us, because we might as well as been under the control of Satan himself.
Now, as Christians, the Spirit of God lives in us and is able to direct us through the Spirit.
A Christians is under the control of the Holy Spirit,
We confess the same Lord.
We confess the same Lord.
We depend on the same God. Look at vs. 4-6
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
We depend on the same God.
Look closely at the verses again. There are many Gifts- one spirit. There are many ways of serving- one Lord. There are are lots of jobs- but one God who powers them all.
So, no mattere your gift, or your ministry, or the many ways you might serve- it’s the same God who empowers those activities in each of us.
The source of our ministry , our work, our activity is God… not ourselves. So this is not a competition- our point is to glorify God- not ourselves or any one person....
Caitlyn Clark-yes,she’s a superstar.... but the church should always remember that we are not the superstar- Jesus is. We are supporting cast members and all the glory goes to Him- not us.
We confess the same Lord.
We depend on the same God.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
We minister to the same body.
Spiritual gifts are given for corporate employment, not individual enjoyment.
Do you know why the Corinthian church needed to be reminded of this? They were using spiritual gifts to promote themselves and not prosper the church.
Their gifts were divisively used for themselves instead of the growth of the church and the glory of God.
Gifts , when properly used, promote harmony not division and help the whole church/community not any one person.
Listen to the various gifts:
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
When you read these three passages, you will find 19 gifts. God is not limited by that. Paul was not exhausting the gifts, he was showing how God works.... gifts in everything.
No boasting of gifts, no complaining about gifts- they are meant for the whole body.
We confess the same Lord.
We depend on the same God.
We Minister to the same body.
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
The baptism of the spirit is something that occurs at conversion, not to be pursued, every Christian has had it.
To be baptized by God’s spirit means that we belong to Christ’s body- the church. Being filled with the spirit means our bodies belong to Christ.
Being filled with the spirit gives us many things.... look at Acts 1.8
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
power for witnessing
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
joyfulness and submission
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
Christlikeness
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
a growing understanding of God’s word.
We confess the same Lord.
We depend on the same God.
We Minister to the same body.
We have the same experience of Christ
