Series Review: Given to Unity: The Lord’s Prayer
The Great Discourse: You will do even greater things through the Spirit’s lead.
Text Idea: Jesus Prayed for His Disciples to be Sanctified so they could serve.
Sermon Idea: Being Sanctified IN the Word prevents us from being corrupted by the world.
Interrogative Statement:Does the world see you as distinctly devoted to the Lord’s truths?
Purpose Statement: My purpose for this sermon is to help you understand how Jesus has set you up for success in His purpose for your life.
I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those You have given Me, because they are Yours.
Everything I have is Yours, and everything You have is Mine, and I have been glorified in them.
I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name that You have given Me, so that they may be one as We are one.
While I was with them, I was protecting them by Your name that You have given Me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.
Now I am coming to You, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have My joy completed in them.
I have given them Your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
I am not praying that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one.
They are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
I sanctify Myself for them, so they also may be sanctified by the truth.
The Disciples Were Sanctified to Serve the Name Above all Names (9-12).
Explanation:
Sanctification: To be set apart by distinctness, devotion, and moral purity.
“The World (of it or in it)” 12x in our section. Where we get the word cosmos from: Meaning a created realm, considered distinct, spacial- temporary place distinct from the world by its nature.
Noted in Scripture as the morally bankrupt, sinful bi-product of sin entering the world and it is also used to define the people of that broken, bankrupt bi-product.
“For God so Loved the world…”
Here, Jesus draws a distinction between those who are His father’s and those of the world.
“Glorified in them” Meaning, they have exulted the name of Christ above their own
Protection
There is great power in His name.
Illustration:
V. 12 Protect as I have protected them.
Summoning the Twelve, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and power to heal diseases.
Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
“Take nothing for the road,” He told them, “no walking stick, no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don’t take an extra shirt.
Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Then
The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash.
Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you.
However, don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
It is at the name of Jesus that every knee will bow and every tongue confess.
Argumentation:
The purpose for this protection is so they could be Given to Unity; a unity as close to each other as Jesus is to the Father.
The protection is from the worldly influence which creates division:
The Apostles are a tremendous anomaly of opposites being able to accomplish the same thing.
The diversity of that group and the extremes represented in that group makes outsiders looking in scratch their head.
Zelots and tax collectors like those of BLM, Antifa and Those who protested the election results at the Capitol on Jan 6th.
Application:
1. The Disciples were called by God out of the world.
2. The Disciples were given the the distinct name of God which brought them into a relationship with God: By no other name can one be saved.
3. Jesus prayed that they would not be influenced by the world but that they would instead influence the world by their unity.
Can you say that this is true of you this morning?
Do you distinctly remember a time when you gave yourself fully to the Lord, resolving not to be of the world anymore and instead receive His name?
Do you put aside your own views, goals and desires so that Christ can be glorified in you? In this church?
If not…
Transition Statement: Jesus’s disciples not only claim His name and seek his protection they are devoted to cause.
The Disciples Were Sanctified in Their Devotion to Serve (13-16).
Explanation:
V.13
Coming to You.
I speak in the world so that my joy may be complete in them.
The basis of this joy was found when the disciples obeyed Jesus’s commands.
Illustration:
When family members who lost loved ones it can have a few outcomes.
I love the stories of those who devote themselves to helping find the cure.
Argumentation:
Jesus did not place His distinct name on them and die for them so that they could be freed from the curse of this world never to return to it again.
Do you realize Jesus could have prayed. Just take them with me. Get them out of this hell bound world and God would have do so.
On the contrary, He wanted their full devotion to save those dying of sin.
Jesus prays for their protection from the Evil One
And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]
I am writing to you, fathers, because you have come to know the One who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have had victory over the evil one.
I have written to you, children, because you have come to know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you have come to know the One who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, God’s word remains in you, and you have had victory over the evil one.
The Evil One temps us to see the Word of God as insignificant in our lives, useless and confusing. Because he knows that if we do not bring ourselves to see things God’s way we will see it our way and we will also be right and justified for all our actions according to ourselves.
unlike Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
Application:
1. Jesus’s prayer was that the disciples would not see their salvation as a meal ticket out of here.
2. He wanted their hearts to be full of joy like His was when He was Obeying God’s word and seeking to save the lost.
3. SALVATION IS THE JOY OF GOD’S HEART.
Are you experiencing the fullest of Christ’s joy?
Are you devoted to Obeying His Word?
Are you devoted to what God loves?
Transition Statement:
The Disciples were Sanctified by Truth to Serve (17-19).
Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
I sanctify Myself for them, so they also may be sanctified by the truth.
Explanation:
Sanctify Them: This verb is
Aorist tense: Has is and will continue to be verbing.
Active voice: One responsible party for the action.
Imperative mood: Authority in the one speaking, for certain action of the one listening (God).
2nd person: For God to do
Number: singular meaning One thing being done by one person.
In the first part it is God’s role to give them His name setting them apart as distinct by bearing His name.
Next they would be set apart by their choice to devote themselves to His ways.
Here, Jesus is saying God is the only One who can set us apart to moral purity
How would His disciples become sanctified? By God alone when they brought their whole lives into submission to His Word (Your Word is truth).
They (and we for that matter,) must not read the Bible but rather, we should let it read us.
The key to moral purity in you life, freedom over sin, including the sin of not loving people, self-centeredness or refusing to forgive people is ONLY found in the living word of God.
Illustration
The Spirit living in you and yet your life not being brought into submission to the Bible is like a surgeon, experienced and ready to do surgery but without supplies or any tools.
The Doctor knows what they would do to help you and are certain they could but without tools they cannot help you.
The Bible is the tool that the Spirit uses to do biopsy’s on our heart, remove bad attitudes or behaviors and to infuse His thoughts into our thoughts.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Jesus knew the only way they disciples would have His joy and love for lost people, is if they were letting God’s word read them
Argumentation:
V. 18Just as you sent me into the World, So I am sending them
Why did God send Jesus into the world??? LOVE
God loves the idea that the disciples would appreciate their relationship with Him so much that they would lean on Him and and not their own interests and that by do so they would be GIVEN to UNITY in ways the world has never seen.
Then they are to take the love to the world so that those who belong to God would be freed indeed.
2,000 years later. the Mission still stands
Matthew 28:18–20 (HCSB)
Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Application:
God would set them apart as distinctly His.
He would ask for nothing less than their full devotion to his mission
He would change their lives by giving them all of His joy as the walked in obedience.
[closing/opener]
Does the world see you as distinctly devoted to the Lord’s truths?
Purpose Statement: My purpose for this sermon is to help you understand how Jesus has set you up for success in His purpose for your life.
If you are a child of God:
1. You walk out of here bearing the name above all other names. You do not need to doubt that God is for you and He wants to help you as you love a world He loves.
If you are a child of God:
2. Don’t let the Devil convince you that you are not good enough to serve on God’s team. You are not of this world, you are His And He is yours!
If you are a child of God:
3. Let God’s Word regularly shape and change your heart so that you love reaching lost people as much as Jesus does.
