Introduction:
Matthew 10:34–39 ESV
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Pray

1. The Gospel is Divisive (vv. 34-36)

Matthew 10:34–36 ESV
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.
Jesus only brings peace among those who are being saved by the gospel - Luke 2:14
Luke 2:14 ESV
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Peace with God
Peace with other believers
Households will be divided over the gospel
closest family relationships
these mentioned are the ones that would usually make up a household when the son married and moved in with his wife
You cannot remain neutral with Jesus
The hatred of the world towards us will be great
Application
What have you really had to give up for Jesus? Think about that for a moment.
What has been the cost for you to follow Jesus?

2. Our Allegiance to Christ Must Reign Supreme Above Any Other

Matthew 10:37 ESV
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
What about family?
The greatest way you love your family is to put God first.
Your Love for Jesus must be first in everything:
your love for them
your finances
your family time
your family decisionso

3. We Must Love Jesus More than We Love Ourselves (vv. 38-39)

Matthew 10:38–39 ESV
38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
The paradox of the Christian faith is that when we lose everything for Christ, we gain everything and more back.
We have to take up our cross daily -> we never get over trying to take back our lives
Application:
What is the hardest thing for you to crucify in the flesh?
Pride that you need help
Independence
“Fun” And worldliness
Are these things really worth it and bringing you joy in your life or are they ruining it?
