Teach us to pray

Teach us to pray
Luke 11:1 (teach us to pray)
They didn’t say teach us to do miracles..
I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach." - *Charles Spurgeon*
Matt.6:5-8 the do nots.
Matt. 6:9-13 the dos

1. Recognize the position of adoption (vs 9)

reverence Fear Awe Respect
Rom. 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Galatians 4:4–5 (KJV 1900): But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

2. Realize his holiness (vs 9)

We know he is holy. But the text says hallowed be, not hallowed is. This is to denote that we are to esteem him as holy. We must strive to view God as holy. Without a proper view of God, we will never approach him as the Holy and righteous God that he is.
Speak of a proper view of the holiness of God.
Heb. 9:21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
Something had to hallow the tabernacle.
Blood was used to do that.
The holy place was hallowed.
Uzza steadying the ark and it killed him

3. Rest in his providence (vs10)

He is the only one that knows all.
It’s his will not ours
Notice christs example of obedience to the providence of God in Matt. 26:39
And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

4. Remind God of his promises (11-12)

He hasn’t forgot. But when we petition From a position of his will, he is more likely to fulfill that request because he is obligated to his word.
We are not doing this for his benefit or remembrance, but rather to keep our prayers in line with what he is desiring for us. It has been said, God answers his children’s cry with a resounding yes, when they pray what he has planned according to his will.
Vs 11 speaks to the promise that he will take care of his own. He has told us our value is greater than many sparrows, and we will most assuredly meet our needs.
Vs 12 speaks to promises such as 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

5. Redirect our perverted ways (vs 13)

Our nature is contrary to his. So we must submit it to his kingdom
We are a new creature after salvation, our prayer should reflect that he’s done something in us,
We have an Advocate in jesus
Pray in the Power of the Holy Spirit.
