Call to Worship

Say: Let us now begin to worship the Father the Son, the Holy Spirit, Our Call to worship Comes to us from

Psalm 45:6–7 ESV
6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; 7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;

Introduction

Those of you who have been around here for a little while know that I plan ahead for my sermon series. I make plans and execute them, having a plan helps create success. It gives you an end goal and allows you to work towards something.
So God had leaned into my heart to preach through some of the Psalms. So I picked the summer of this year last year. I also planned out the next 2 summers as well. We will take our summer series in the next two years through the Beatitudes in 25 and the Lord’s Prayer in Summer 26.
I’m also praying about the securing new shell for the church drive way so pray for me. We need to take care of our facility and keep the bride beautiful
Back to my story. While planning I looked at the types of Psalms, today we are covering the category of Wedding Psalms. Psalm 45 in particular. I didn’t think we’d be in sexual perversion month like we are. I just saw June 9th and said that will be a good day for speaking about a wedding Psalm.
So God in his sovereignty has appointed that we would speak about marriage in this month in which god’s standard of marriage and family is the most under attack.
So Today Let’s look at Marriage in the Psalms and be transformed in our faith by the Lord’s truth.

Text

Psalm 45 ESV
To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah; a love song. 1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. 2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and majesty! 4 In your majesty ride out victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let your right hand teach you awesome deeds! 5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; the peoples fall under you. 6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; 7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; 8 your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; 9 daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. 10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear: forget your people and your father’s house, 11 and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him. 12 The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people. 13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold. 14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind her. 15 With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king. 16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons; you will make them princes in all the earth. 17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.

Sermon

We are going to break this down the first section verse 1 and the intions to sing of the glory of the marriage of the Lamb Jesus. verse 2-9 are about King Jesus, Next week we will look at 10-15 are about the Queen being called to a wedding and 16 and 17 are the outcome of the wedding

Beautiful Marriage

Christians value marriage
Psalm 45:1 ESV
1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.
Verse one is a great introduction to the theme of marriage. Marriage excites the worship group as they sing about it.
This BTW is the Christian perspective on Marriage. We are excited when people get married, we want people to get married, we want marriages to succeed, we want Christians to marry Christians, we are to model marriage in our Christian walks. When children speak of marriage we should challenge our boys to be worthy men and husband and our girls to be gracious wives.
I was speaking to a young man that just got pulled in to hobby lobby and he sent out “just got pulled into hobby lobby by my fiancee you may never see me again!”
I responded “Find a picture frame, not a cheap one, buy it for her and tell her we should take a picture together. You'll thank me later.”
We must be building up the institution that God has created!
As of 2022 132 million Americans or 49.3% were unmarried in this country. Woman are 50% as of right now.
We must build up this beautiful thing God has made.
This is why the church must stand for marriage, why Christians must stand for true marriage. God defines marriage Uncle Sam must submit to Christ and return marriage back to the king of kings definition.

Why Treasure marriage?

We are hearing at a marriage happen
Marriage is a constant theme throughout the Bible. It is a symbol of the relationship God has with his people. Those that truly believe in him.
The scriptures open with a marriage in Gen. 2:22-25
Genesis 2:22–25 ESV
22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Then Disaster happens! Adultery! Sin enters they consume the fruit, the nation of Israel plays the harlot with other gods! The people are warned not to do so but do anyway
Exodus 34:14–16 ESV
14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods.
God puts away his bride for her unfaithfulness
Jeremiah 3:1 (ESV)
1 “If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 3:8 ESV
8 She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore.
Yet he does this
Jeremiah 3:12 ESV
12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, “ ‘Return, faithless Israel, declares the Lord. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares the Lord; I will not be angry forever.
God brings back his wife to himself and they re-marry
he says
Jeremiah 31:31–32 ESV
31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
Jesus the bridegroom comes!
Mark 2:19 ESV
19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
Jesus is the Bridegroom! He declares what Jeremiah says!
Luke 22:20 NKJV
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.
He promises to Go and make a place
John 14:3 ESV
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
This was the practice of betrothed men. (EXPLAIN)
And history Ends with a wedding
Revelation 19:6–10 ESV
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
So when we see the glee of the worship writer we must remember that wedding is the symbol of God redeeming a people to himself. It is a holy picture of what God has done and will do!
So treasure marriage. It is the birth place of Children, it is a place of safety, it is a place that creates and builds. (EXPLAIN CHURCH-BRIDE AND HUMAN-FAMILY)

Enter the King

In a wedding the husband and groomsmen usually walk out together from a side room to await the coming bride. And like that tradition our texts start with the king entering the picture.

Verse 2

Jesus become a treasure to his bride the church. This is the corporate image of all believers You and I like a bride seeing her husband down the aisle thinks her husband to be handsome are to see or Christ as worthy. The unbeliever sees Jesus and turns away. We see him with fear and rejoicing!
He is blessed forever! We have a Jesus that is blessed forever and when we through the church are joined to him, you are also blessed forever!
This is an allusion to the promise of David (Expand on this)

Verse 3-5

As a King he comes with a sword! he is armed!
So we learn that he is able and can fight on behalf of his queen and also his kingdom.
This means for us who believe As Puritan theologian John Owen put it.
Works of John Owen: Volume 8 Sermon VII: The Advantage of the Kingdom of Christ in the Shaking of the Kingdoms of the World

[2dly.] Meet him with your supplications. Cry unto him, as Ps. 45:3–5, “Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most Mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously, because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.” This will make you be the armies of heaven, that follow him in his great undertakings, Rev. 19:14. It is his praying people that are his conquering armies that follow him. Now you find it coming, leave not pulling with all your strength, lest it roll back again. Shoot not two or three arrows, and so give over; but never leave shooting until the enemies of the Lord be all destroyed. Seeing it is his gospel whose advancement the Lord Jesus aimeth at in all these dispensations, and whose quarrel alone he revengeth (whatever men may do), help on to the advancement of that gospel of his; which, as formerly it was oppressed by the height and tyranny of the tower of Babel, so for the present is exceedingly denied and cumbered by the rubbish of it being in some measure cast down.

A note For Kings Application

I would take this armed king as a picture men of what you should aim to image yourself after look for ways that you can be likewise. Seek victory, seek to teach awesome and righteous deeds. Keep your arrows sharp and know how to use them. Part of kinglyness is being able to protect your kingdom. We live in America use that to your benefit. Strong, capable, God-fearing Christian men are what we need, and is what Jesus is. For my single guys in the room I hope you’re taking notes! For the married men you can do this in your own way starting today at every stage of your life. Strength looks different in your 60’s then 20’s but you can be strong and capable in your own way.
We see what Jesus as a capable king and it causes us to Psalm 45:5
Psalm 45:5 (ESV)
the peoples fall under you.
In Eastern cultures when a king or emperor shows up they would fall to the ground, head in the dirt. In the west we usually bound for joy! Their are videos of presidents entering West Point and you can see the young officers bounding up and down as he walks in! We can’t help but follow our strong king! The person of King Jesus should inspire you, you should feel moved toward greatness in your quarter. He exuded a weight of presence a gravity or a gravitas as they used to say. Jesus is a king that you can feel enter the room. Good leaders inspire men to follow, men be a strong leader and people will follow you! Are you this way Christian are you known for your faith and ability because of your faith. I think of Boaz (expand)
Ruth 2:4 ESV
4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you!” And they answered, “The Lord bless you.”
That is the kind of man to be, Jesus is this man. We must be these kind of men and women!

Verses 6-9

Christ will never be thwarted (Expand)
Christ throne shall never pass away (6a)
Christ is the one predicted one (6a)
Christ is a prefect God judge (6b)
Jesus loves righteousness and hates wickedness (6b)
He is the foretold messiah (repeating prophecy) (7a)
Jesus is greater the Moses, David, Elijah (7b)
Christ is a pleasant odor to the Lord and two his people, like a king wearing fin cologne on his wedding day. (8a) (do likewise Christian be a pleasant odor for the Lord in your life
People can’t help but sign and worship in his presecnce! (8b)
You can see a blessing for Christian women here! You ladies are daughters of the king and one day you shall live in and attend matters of court in your fathers house. Imagine it says you’re ladies of honor, that means you are doing great things to make your father the kings home beautiful! So your gifting will be put to perfect use one day! If you’re a designer, an architect, an organizor, a crafty person, a musical person, a at home chef, a creator of any type you will be doing great things in your fathers house!
You can see how King Jesus treats his bride Clothes her in Gold! and the ais the finest Gold possible! (9b) Men take note! Seek to make your bride a women of Gold in your sight, do what it takes to make this happen in a holy way. Young men this is your Goal to become a man that in your own way can clothe your future wife in Gold.
For next Week....

The Gospel

If hearing this you are struck by the bridegroom, by King Jesus I want you to circle back to verse 5
Psalm 45:5 (ESV)
5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies;
Jesus never misses his shot, He is a master of weapons, he doesn’t use blunted weapons but ones that pierce.
His arrows pierce deeply into man’s very nature his very core being.
You will be pierced by him either in judgment or by the shear awe of him as you fall down before him in faith. He will not miss.
You don’t want to fall under his arrows of judgement you will surely be destroyed. Nations tremble at the arrows of his gospel doing whatever they can to keep them away. They can feel them pierce them daily.
The question for you is will you fall before the king or die in judgement by his might?
It will be an awful day when his weapons are made plain before all mankind he will judge men, nations, churches with his mighty force. So where do you stand in the kings courts by faith or in the opposing armies who are guaranteed to fail?

Benediction

Say: As we close our service of worship dear brother and sister please stand for our benediction and receive by faith this blessing from God

Psalm 41:10–13 (NKJV)
10 But You, O Lord, be merciful to me (US), and raise me(US) up, That I(WE) may repay them. 11 By this I(WE) know that You are well pleased with me(US), Because my(OUR) enemy does not triumph over me(US). 12 As for me(US), You uphold me(US) in my(OUR) integrity, And set me(US) before Your face forever. 13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel From everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen.
