Connection:
Sign and the thing Signified. McDonalds Logo. Visible Proclamation—improper and strange without the sign. Marks us off from the world, and marks us off as God’s covenant people in God’s covenant community.
Jonathan Leeman says: “How do believers gather in Jesus’ name, formally shaking hands in agreement on the what and the who of the gospel? We do it through baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is the doorway into a church, while the Lord’s Supper is the regular family meal for the church.”
To neglect biblical baptism, church membership, and the Lord’s Supper—is to neglect the very fence that Jesus put in place to mark off his church in this world. We are the outpost of the Kingdom of God. Thus, we must know and cherish the meaning and mode of the sacraments that proclaim our heavenly citizenship.
Theme:
The Sacrament of Baptism (Q97-101)
Need:
There are so many different views on Baptism between Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Reformed Presbyterians, Baptists, and Evangelicals. We need to be grounded in the biblical teaching, which I believe is the Baptist teachings, so that we can have a clear conscience in remembering and celebrating believer’s baptisms here at Calvary Bible Church.
Purpose:
To instruct us in the proper nature, meaning, recipients, and mode of the sacrament of baptism; to comfort us in the Gospel that is signified by Baptism; and to exhort the saints to walk in the newness of life in church membership as Baptism obligates them to.

Q97. What is baptism? A97. Baptism is an ordinance of the New Testament instituted by Jesus Christ, to be unto the party baptized a sign of his fellowship with him, in his death, burial, and resurrection; of his being ingrafted into him (Rom. 6:3, 4, 5; Col. 2:12; Gal. 3:27); of remission of sins (Mk. 1:4; Acts 2:38, and 22:16); and of his giving up himself unto God through Jesus Christ, to live and walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:3, 4).

Baptism is an ordinance (or sacrament) of the NT instituted by Jesus Christ, to be unto the party baptized a sign of his fellowship with him, in his death, burial, and resurrection and of his being ingrafted into him.
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Baptism is a sign of remission of sins.
John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
Baptism is a sign of giving up ourselves unto God through Jesus Christ, to live and walk in newness of life.
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Q98. To whom is baptism to be administered? A98. Baptism is to be administered to all those who actually profess repentance towards God (Acts 2:38; Mt. 3:6), faith in and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ, and to none other (Acts 8:12, 36, 37, 38; 10:47, 48).

Baptism is to be administered to all those who actually profess repentance towards God.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Baptism is to be administered to all those who actually profess repentance towards God.
But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
Baptism is to be administered to none other (neither infants, or any without repentance and faith).
Q99. Are the infants of such as are professing believers to be baptized? A99. The infants of such as are professing believers are not to be baptized, because there is neither command or example in the holy scriptures, or certain consequence from them to baptize such (Ex. 23:13; Pr. 30:6; Lk. 3:7, 8).
Q99. Are the infants of such as are professing believers to be baptized? A99. The infants of such as are professing believers are not to be baptized, because there is neither command or example in the holy scriptures, or certain consequence from them to baptize such (Ex. 23:13; Pr. 30:6; Lk. 3:7, 8).
The infants of such professing believers are not to be baptized, because there is no command or example in Scripture
“Pay attention to all that I have said to you, and make no mention of the names of other gods, nor let it be heard on your lips.
Do not add to his words,
lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
“When you come to appear before me,
who has required of you
this trampling of my courts?
The infants of such professing believers are not to be baptized because there is no certain consequence from Scripture for infant baptism.
He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
“ ‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”
These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Q100. How is Baptism rightly administered? A100. Baptism is rightly administered by immersion, or dipping the whole body of the party in water, into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, according to Christ’s institution, and the practice of the apostles (Mt. 3:16; Jn. 3:23; 4:1, 2; Mt. 28:19, 20; Acts 8:38; Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:12), and not by sprinkling or pouring of water, or dipping some part of the body, after the tradition of men.

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Baptism is not to be administered by sprinkling or pouring of water, or dipping some part of the body, after the tradition of men.
I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.
Q101. What is the duty of such who are rightly baptized? A101. It is the duty of such who are rightly baptized to give up themselves to some particular and orderly church of Jesus Christ, that they may walk in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless (Acts 2:41, 42; 5:13, 14; 9:26; 1 Pet. 2:5; Lk. 1:6).

It is the duty of the baptized to give up themselves to some particular and orderly church of Jesus Christ (that they might become a covenanted member of a local church).
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple.
It is the duty of such that are rightly baptized to walk in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.
We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.
Sinclair Ferguson says: “When I see the signs I do not think about myself but about Christ. The sign of baptism proclaims the gospel to us; it points us to Christ and all that faith receives from him. In baptism I am told to be someone who has died to sin and been raised into newness of life, and summons me to live as a forgiven sinner released from the dominion of sin in the transforming power of Christ’s resurrection life! Think about what that means. It means that, as a believer, remembering that I have been baptized, I realize that my old life has been buried in Christ’s tomb. I have no right to return to it. That would be to wish that Christ had remained dead rather than risen in power into newness of life.”
