INTRODUCTION: If someone would describe you in a few words, how would they do it?
MAIN POINT: Make all your life all about Jesus
TENSION:When we make some of our life all about Jesus it leaves other things to get in.
22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).
Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside - This is outside Jerusalem.
Remained there with them and was baptizing - Chapter 4 clarifies that Jesus wasn’t baptizing, but his disciples were.
John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim - There are natural springs that overflow into fishing ponds. Like Wiki Watchi . John the Baptist would hang out by water. FIGURE OUT IF ANYTHING ELSE HAPPENED HERE.
People were coming and being baptized -
For John had not yet been put in prison - It was well known that John is going to die in prison later.
25 Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Discussion - Not a fight, but a genuine question.
Purification - Baptism was seen as a purification over what he needed to do .
Rabbi - Means teacher.
Across the Jordan - That’s where he met Jesus.
Look - This is important.
All are going to him - They are following him now instead of you. Jesus is stealing your ministry.
Same temptation as in the garden - you can be like god.
I know a couple dozen pastors in the area. You would be pleasantly surprised how well we get a long.
A person cannot receive anything - Everything that you have is a gift of God.
I am not the Christ - You should remind yourself that.
For me, I have to remind myself I am not Jesus I can’t help everyone, I can’t be cathartic.
John is saying he is best man - Always a bridesmaid never a bride joke, but we will be. Someone
My joy is complete - John’s joy was pointing to jesus.
He must increase, but I must decrease - We often want to say he must increase and I want increase too.
He must increase, but I must decrease.
He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Above all vs earth - There is a difference between from being in heaven or on earth (funny illustration that tell a difference between Alabama vs Florida)
Bears witness - He is telling what is the message from heaven.
receives his testimony - Believes him.
Sets his seal - visual . Sign off. Give full approval.
Spirit without Meaasure. - When Jesus came he had the full Spiritin him. All the Spiritual gifts, al the power. We don’t get that. Just part.
Father loves the son and has given all things into his hand-
We make Jesus our all when we believe enough to obey.
We make Jesus our all when we believe enough to obey.
