An invitation from God is always based on a felt need.
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
The word who was with God in the beginning, the word who is God, the word made flesh
His first words are… “What do you want?”
Where are you staying?
Come and you will see.
you will see angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.
The Point of the invitation is so that those who are seeking can see
There is a need to see God’s family
Everyone is starving to be a part of something greater than themselves
Everyone is looking for a cause to give their life to
Everyone is looking for a place that belong to
God’s answer is of course is not a what but a who
Jesus
Not a place or a cause or even a movement but a tangible connection to real relationships.
A Family
So the invitations that we focused on in June:
Come have fun with us
Come serve with us
Come worship with us
Come study the bible with us
Are simply the best way to bring others to see Jesus through His family.
Felt need
And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
Jesus takes a moment here.
A moment that must have been profound for those present because Mark goes out of his way to tell us Jesus took his time in responding to the crowd.
Long enough for everyone to know that what he was going to say was the absolute truth in his heart.
“Here are my mother and my brothers!” ESV
(The word translated “Here” is actually idou or Behold)
So the term ‘Here’ is the emphatic.
As in to say, not out there with those seeking to silence me. But here:
those seated around me,
hanging on every word,
who are physically tired from the following,
who have left all behind,
those who are here!
I just want to be HERE.
One of God’s purposes for his family is to offer the world a glimpse of who he is
