Intro
Intro
some more deliberation about who Jesus is
some more people wanting to kill him
Jesus showing himself to be the Messiah despite the Jewish leaders’ best efforts
Late to the Party
Late to the Party
an interesting conversation with Jesus’ brothers
they think he should ride this wave of popularity. they don’t understand or really even believe
he goes to Judea late so that the Jewish leaders don’t kill him
the conflict about Jesus in the voice of the people is the main point of the passage
Jesus goes to the temple to teach
he is not one of their lawyers and scribes and yet he understands the law better than them
he speaks to one of the most common reasons why they are eager to kill him all the time- that he does works on the Sabbath
gives the example of Moses and the fact that none of them are perfect under their law
doesn’t mention that he himself is without sin
How to Kill the Christ
How to Kill the Christ
an unfounded tradition believes that the Christ will appear from the sky one day like super man and save the people from their oppression
not from any scripture, in fact the prophets give the opposite
later in the passage when the people are deliberating about him they will talk about the actual prophecy about Bethlehem
they will not realize that in so many words he fulfills both of the things they are searching for
the Pharisees want him dead now more than ever
he continues reiterating the point he’s been making since Samaria
if you want real fulfillment it will be through him
the officers don’t arrest him because he does nothing wrong and he speaks the truth in love
Nicodemus defends him before the other Pharisees, ending the matter for the moment
Application
Application
we will see it later, but none of the reason given for killing Jesus is justified
he was a man who lived solely for the purpose of doing good for others
he followed the law as intended by the one who gave it and did nothing other than what God sent him to do
even the Romans couldn’t help but see that there was something special about him
they didn’t want to kill him
people were divided then about Jesus just as they are now
he was never any more or less than what he claimed to be
I’ve said that before an I’ll say it again
John in this chapter wants you to see what Matthew spends a whole book talking about
Jesus is the Christ of prophecy and it does not take the greatest minds of the time to put that together
