Greatness v. 4 how great this man was. Abraham tithed to Him

to give tithes is an act of religious homage, religious worship, greater religious dignity, v. 1 He is a priest of God

2:16 Abraham as the father of all believers

9-10 through Abraham Levi paid tithes to Mel

Son of God as person is the pattern by which Mel is said to be priest and king

Dignity of office follows from significance of person

How does the Divinity of Jesus shape hist priestly ministry

v. 26-27 these expressions are rooted in His eternal divinity

Because He is son the outcome of his work is many sons

In his High Priestly Ministry

Exaltation as an oath event cf. Psalm 110:4 “4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.””

This is connected with its fulfillment int he exaltation of Christ.

Perfecting of the Son as High Priest

2:10, 5:9, 7:28 “perfecting” in terms as his identification with Human Beings

4:14-16 Perfecting is brought into connection with three other Ideas

suffering, temptation, sympathy/mercy

How are these four aspects of Christ related

Suffering and temptation develop sympathy. They bring about the perfecting of Christ for his priestly work and in his priestly work.

2:9- exaltation is the result of suffering

2:10- Sufferings are the Means to perfection

Fellowship in suffering “author’ and he has ‘brothers’

v. 11 Jesus is active in sanctifying His people
